I am the same on Yahoo as I am face to face. It's the easiest way to be.
If people ask me about where I go to church or what is my religion, I do not lie, and brace myself for a conversion attempt.

Sarah - I hope that what I write here is as respectful of others beliefs (whatever thay are) as if I was talking face to face. That's only common courtesy. Unfortunately, there are lots of people in YA (theists and atheists, liberals and conservatives) and in the rest of the world who treat anyone who disagrees with them as some kind of mental incompetent to be abused and denigrated.
The best societies flourish with an open flow of ideas - they get into trouble where those ideas are suppressed.

I would respond in the some way, but still make sure that they know that I accept their beliefs. I never bring the subject religion up personally, but if someone else does then I'll say what I think. I never 'pretend' to respect others' beliefs, I actually do.

Yes I would. What I say here, even so some decide to interpret it otherwise, would be said by myself in a very even tone of voice (not shouting, not angry). Just about everyone I know on a very personal basis knows my views and if someone doesn't and asks I'm not hesitant about telling them.
I live in a more liberal area of America so letting my beliefs to be known isn't a big deal for me. Now if I lived in the conservative south then that might be a different story.

Atheism is a belief in itself; the belief that there is no god or supreme being. I have no problem at all defending my views with someone be it over the internet or face to face. There have been occasions on the street when Christians have come up to me and tried the old "Have you seen the light, brother?" game and ive ended up having a debate with them for going on 20 minutes. I love a good argument and id never be afraid to hold back my beliefs!
Tirana.. are you for real?!

I would absolutely respond the same way.
I am no more able to feign respect for a theist than for a person who spends their time talking to an invisble leprechaun in their right nostril. That goes for in "real life" and online.

No, in at least one place. I had a job where I was afraid to speak up about religion (which was brought up A LOT) because I was afraid it would catch the eye of some rather intolerant managers. Yes, it's illegal to discriminate on the basis of religion, but it then becomes a matter of finding a real reason to fire someone who you want to fire for personal prejudices.

I would if I encountered the sort of questions that get asked on here.
Luckily, I live in a country where religious beliefs are one's own affair, and no-one tries to push anything onto anyone else.

Yes, Sarah, I would and I do. However, there was a time when I felt the consequences, like losing my job, would have been a problem and I was silent. Not anymore... I think atheists are starting to realize they are not as isolated as many thought, and with the current political situations, many are finding their voice.

yes..I would....would you give me the respect that I give you as a christian.... or would you tell me how wrong I am ? I honestly feel that as the question suggests many do not... but what is the real reason...sometimes it is just they may not want to hear the lecture of how you are right and we are wrong....is it so bad for some one to just say that it is nice and let it go.....or is it better to stand there and tell someone how wrong they are...some times it may be a question of politeness... something many trade off in the name of religion
