I am 21 years old and live at home with my dad. I don't have much school credits under my belt. I get a check every month for 1000 dollars, and 5000 dollars semi-annually until I am 23.I also get a check for 2,868 every month but that doesn't start until I am 25. I am going to look for a different job, probably get two jobs I don't know. I still need a car, although I am looking for something practical. I mean, there are plenty of other people who have survived right?

Yes if you want to, you already make more than some married people with kidz and lots more than some retired people who did not have decent pension plans or never made enough to get max Soc Sec.
I personally know several people who would be in hog heaven if they made $17,000 a year......
make sure you have insurance and go to school and don't let every Tom Dick and Harry mooch of of you as a matter of fact you should probably not tell anyone but your future spouse when that issue comes up that you have this gravy train,,,,,,, not quite a silver spoon in your mouth but to much to be bragging about.....

Since there is only you and your dad, you might want to still live there and save your money after using some of it for schooling (start your first two years at a community college, get your AA then transfer that to a four-year college or university in your area). Although that money sounds like a lot, really it isn't. You could get yourself a dependable clunker car (and learn how to make it work by yourself). Once you get a decent job where you're earning good money then you can buy yourself a new car. Having two jobs is good. At some point you can put some money into a Roth IRA. And maybe even work on the net internationally with your own business. If you live with your dad then the two of you can share and things will be easier for the both of you.

You need a reality check. Things are too easy for you. What you really need is a good financial counselor to guide you to save & invest your money wisely. You also need to seriously think about what type of person you want to become. Try to picture yourself at your grandfathers age and then write down
"What have I accomplished in my life time & what am I proud of". Everyone needs a real purpose in life and too feel good about who they are. Right now you are just skimming along with no goals in mind. You are so blessed and don't even know/appreciate it. Take it from one who made a mistake, had no help and was on their own as a single mom at 20 and had the responsibility of working & raising a child on the salary I earned. Yeah, other people have survived by there own determination and hard work.

Live at home and save your money. Being out on your own can get really expensive. Its difficult to find a decent apartment and pay all the bills at the same time.

Sounds like it would be helpful for both you and your dad to continue to pool your efforts together. You're both adults and should be able to handle that very nicely. Unless of course you dont get along. The goal is not to simply 'survive'
.....But rather to enjoy life. And the only way to do that is to be comfortable with WHO you are, and WHERE you are.
