The books and authors people were not that helpful. Lets see how you guys do:
Primary needs
1) Needs to be able to travel the world
Secondary
1) Intelligent (but not professor-type smart.... I already have three other scholars in the book so he cannot be the professor type)
2) Witty
3) Investigative (but not a journalist or detective)
4) Self-sufficiency, no managers breathing down his neck
5) Needs to have an assistant/sidekick though
Other
1) No spy/military career
2) Again, not professor stuff. Maybe zoologist or something but thats pushing it
3) No office-type stuff. This guy likes to be out exploring
4) Not a writer!

Not much help here either. The doctor suggestion wasn't too bad but I think usually doctors have their own office, they don't really travel! Besides there is already a character in the book that works for the UN health thing. Something more adventerous.

How about a doctor ( and his beautiful lab assistant ) from the Center for Disease Control that are sent to South America to track down an outbreak of SARS ( Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome) that has reached epidemic levels and is beginning to show up in the USA? To soften his "professional side" you could make him a real ladies man that has a difficult time staying focused. But when he does get down to the work at hand , he's brilliant but arrogant and his assistant is the only woman that can keep him in line.

Not a journalist? Like maybe National Geographic type journalist?
