My High School Spanish teacher told me a story about his mission that I believe could offer at least a partial answer.
He served a mission in Central America and while there he ran into many natives who blame their current problems in life on one of their ancestors younger brothers who tried to usurp power over them. The reason that story could be looked at as a sources for the Nephites and Lamanites is that same exact idea is what drove Laman and Lemuel (the original ancestors of the people who became known as the Lamanites).
I must mention that the best way to find out about the validity of the Book of Mormon is by taking up the challenge given in it in the final chapter of the Book.
Moroni 10:3-5
3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

Fact of the matter there were none. That is because the nephites were destroyed and the Lamanites broke into many tribes as is told in the book of Mormon. However there are many archaeological sites that confirm some of the stories...but I'm sure that is just coincidence right?

I'll answer your question with another question, What sources today have the correct pronounciation(as given by members of the tribe) as well as the original names of all the tribes in south-central America(more specifically the Olmec and the Mayan)?
Did the Mayans call themselves Mayans or did the Olmecs call themselves Olmecs or was it given to them by future archaeologists who simply made up a name for them?
In conclusion: of course you wont find the names Nephites or Lamanites in any historical source because NOBODY knows what the Central American Indians called themselves.

Yes. The Hopi elders teach of the lost white brother Pahana who will return and restore their religion. They tell of how the people sailed across the Pacific to reach this land.
