What exactly is a "special force"? Why don't the USMC have a "special force" group?

The Marines don't have one because they are capable of responding to any situation that may arise. Before a unit can even deploy, they have to be SOC (special operations capable). Basically, when say the Army's Green Beret practice for a rescue mission, they train the same scenario for weeks. The Marine's they already have that training and exercise it a couple of times, then they go do it. They are the most versatile of the branches of service. Some people think that force recon is a special forces branch, but really, they are just an integral part of the Corps.

The USMC is a Special Force. They have an even more Special Force: Force Recon.

The Marines do have SF Marines. We actually had the first SF unit. The "Raiders". They were, however, discontinued after WWII. Force Recon picked back up during Vietnam and has been in continuous service ever since. We also have MARSOC/MSOB (Marine Special Operations Command/Marine Special Operations Battalion). They fall under the SOCOM umbrella just like Green Berets, SEALS, and AF P.J.'s. They go through a 7 month assessment and screening and then approximately 18 months of continuing training such as jump school, scout sniper school, Navy BUDS, etc. Hope this helps.

Force Recon is the USMC's version of 'Special Forces' and they were recently placed under the command of Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

What they said... Not sure if Force Recon is SF or not officially. It would be more accurate to call the specialized. not special. ;)
