Humans by many means seem to have this quest for immortality. Wether through health, religion etc....Do you think jthis will lead us to our biggest destruction because we cannot come to terms with death.

If you disagree then why do we as humans try to prevent death.... To live longer ...to look younger...heaven...are not all these some indirect avoidance of death. Living longer doen not mean you live longer well with a high quality to life....Heaven if there is one then why is death still so contraindicated and viewed as so horrific if we go to some far off better kingdom...

the fact that mankind searches for immortality proves that there is an afterlife

I think that we should be trying to defeat death and stop it from happening for as long as the laws of nature allow us to. We also need to make sure that we fix the problem with aging so that we still have a high quality of life when we're a thousand years old.

But we also need to throw off religion because religion does not provide immortality, despite claims to the contrary (there is no afterlife and just because we want something does not mean we get it (otherwise I'd be universal dictator by now)).

I understand completely where you are coming from. Me personally, I feel that we live forever, not in our vehicle (your body), but through your soul. I have come to welcome death, anytime.
You are right, people are trying to live longer. That's only a sign of their weakness in their faith. Living longer only brings misery because you lose most of your family and friends. You lose your youth vigor, and most of all your body is a prune.

I believe that if humanity keeps searching for immortality, they will face destruction.

Think of life like this:
The driver is the soul and the car is the body. Once the car is junked, the driver is not stuck in limbo, he/she will find another car and life (driving) goes on and on and on.

Not necessarily. A lot of great discoveries have been made by accident because of the search for the fountain of youth. Mind you, a lot of people have been killed as a result, but you get the good with the bad.
