I've heard it is a way to reach toward God, to project the prayers skyward... Is this true?

If so... how is this different to the Tower of Babel? Weren't they trying to reach heaven too?

Its sort of like the Christian athlete that prays giving thanks to God for allowing him to make valuable points for his team, the steeple points to the God that the church worships.
