All the other answers listed here are good. My suggestion, and what has worked for me, is to do some charity work for the less fortunate. For example, the Meals On Wheels Program, your local City Mission, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Soup Kitchen, Homeless Shelter, the List is endless. And you'll meet a lot of good people, and you'll honestly feel like your making a positive difference for the better in your part of the World ! It doesn't get much better than that !

Search to find what is making you lonely. Loneliness isn't from not being around somebody, it's from the pain of lacking what you need. That could be a person but it could also be from being surounded by everybody yet feeling left out or that nobody addresses your need to be recognized and cared for/about.
Do you find no solace in possessions, no satisfaction in pleasurable things (love/food/hobbies/games) and it leaves you sad and maybe wanting for something you may not be able to define?
There's a reason SAD and LONELY tend to go together. Loneliness can depress you a lot. Whether it's a clinical problem or a temporary case of the 'blues' you should talk it out with someone and discover why you are this way and work on it. Nip it in the bud as it gets worse over a long time and why suffer?
Talk to anybody who can lend an ear and give you an answer. The chances are they will be glad to understand what they saw in you that puzzled them. Depression has a bad habit of making you feel like talking does no good and so you don't.
That's not good. Take good care of yourself!

Find lots of interesting things to do. Visit my Yahoo 360 page might gain some inspiration. Especially if you like music.
Also make some nice friends. And when you meet someone you like, even if brief ask to swap details to keep in touch else you might never see them again.
Best thing I ever did was adopt a cat, she was a stray cat, I named her Poe.
She is very special and has a musical meow.
Some very rich people who have no children of their own seem to get lots of pets, but you would think that they might adopt a child, would make more sense if you ask me.
Than spend all their affection on a couple of pinkness dogs.
Hope this information is of some help.

Volunteer.
Hospitals, animal shelters, libraries, community centers would all love to see you.
Take a class.
Do something you've never done before. Parks and Recreation departments of major cities have cheap classes, so do community colleges. Dance, craft/art, martial arts, you name it, you can find someone teaching it.
Teach a class.
What's your favorite thing to do?
Chances are, someone would love to learn.
Ask a co-worker out for coffee or a movie.
Chat rooms. (Just be careful, there are nut jobs out there)

Accept and get used to being lonely. If feels good afterawhile. It's better than feeling you have bad friends.
Or start talking to people more, but learn to like yourself also.

A pet. Seriously. They do wonders. Even something non-interacting like a fish.

Think about the things that make you happy. Reminish your happy moments. Think of the persons who love you and you love. Count all the blessings you have. Be happy that you are still alive.
