what do you all think about a 7mm rifle for deer hunting.?

I know several people that deer hunt with them personally I think it is a little bit of an overkill a .243 would be a better choose in my opinion

There are many 7mm calibers. 7X57, 7mmSTW, 7mmMag and the 7mm-08 which I use for deer just to name a few. Any of these I mentioned and the others out there are all capable of taking deer. Since you didn't specify, I'll assume you mean 7mm Rem. mag. It's a fine cartridge for deer. It shoots flat enough to take deer at reasonable ranges. Most deer where I hunt, wooded mountains, are shot within 100 yards. If you hunt an area with fields or out west much longer shots are possible. If you plan on taking long shots, shoot the gun A LOT so you know your own capability. You'll also need a good scope. A good gun with cheap optics won't do you any good. Don't just do your practicing for a bench with sandbags either. Shoot in positions you will be in when hunting. Sitting, standing, off shooting sticks if you are going to be using them. You will learn how far you can accurately shoot the gun so when you get a chance, you'll have confidence in making the shot. More Deer have been harvested with the 30-30, 32 Winchester Special, 30-06 and 308 than any other calibers.* The 7mm is really not necessary for these animals, but its there if people want to use it.* Most Deer are harvested within 100 yards or less.* Personally I have no need or use for it.*

I think 7x57 is about the perfect balance for medium game like deer. Since nobody seems much to chamber that one any more, 7mm08 is pretty well the same. 280 Remington and 7mm Rem Mag as well as the more esoteric magnums burn more powder than needed and don't really add much compared to the standard 7mm cartridges, but there's nothing wrong with a little extra speed if you're using well-constructed premium bullets.

The various 7 mm cartridges are fine for deer. The 7mm magnum is overkill and the 7mm Ultramag is ridiculous overkill. The last two 7 mm cartridges not only destroy a lot of meat, they are overly loud and can permanently damage your hearing and they have a good bit of recoil that is unnecessary.

As an Industrial Hygienist, let me take a moment to digress and warn you about hearing loss due to loud noises. Do not shoot your gun, any caliber, even the little .22 rimfire. without adequate hearing protection. Hearing loss due to noise is cumulative and it is PERMANENT. There is no cure, no operation and no medicine that will restore it. It is gone forever and it usually happens in the frequency range of human speech. You just won't be able to understand people when they talk to you. Additionally, you will have a permanent ringing in your ears that never goes away. All of this misery is preventable just by using common sense and protecting your hearing when you go out to shoot.

The 7mm mag is a very capable cartridge. This chambering should have no trouble taking down a deer at any range you feel comfortable shooting it.

At close range, you might tear a deer up a bit, though. Maybe opt for a lighter bullet.

Practically all standard 7mm calibers (which are .28 in American caliberation) are more than adequate for deer with the magnums being a bit of an overkill.

I own a 7mm mag and I have taken down every deer I shot with 1 shot. Very feliable gun. A pretty big kick to it though

You can use a 7mm rem mag for deer, but its a bit big. A 7mm is used more for things like elk and moose.
