You are incorrect. The most dangerous factor in freeway safety is difference in speed. Side by side at the same speed, the impact would be absolutely minimal. It is not speed that is dangerous, it is difference in speed. Think of it this way. You ever seen an old lady going 45 mph on the freeway while everyone else is going 75? People who drive slow as a safety precaution are misinformed. The safest speed to go is the same speed as everyone else. This means BE GOING 65 by the time you are at the end of the onramp. Create as little difference in speed as possible. If you are talking about blind spot visibility, that is different. Naturally you would want to avoid these positions but they do not have to do with speed.

Historically the left lane is the passing lane. If your GF is content to drive at the same speed as another car, she should slow down or speed up long enough to put a safe distance between the cars and then transfer to the other lane.

I think it's more of a psychological thing than out of courtesy. People feel like they're threatening a person if they are "choosing" to drive side by side to someone. I know I would! I'd be worried that that person was angry with me, if I were driving at a constant speed and someone suddenly started driving right beside me. It would especially worry me if there was no one else around and they choose to just stay right beside me at the same speed.

you are definitely right. You should always consider the other drivers on the road. Helps prevent road rage! There will always be someone who is traveling faster than you, if you do not allow room for traffic to get around you, you are taking your life in your own hands. Some people get very angry at these things, and will harass you, and/or cause an accident trying to get around. IDEALLY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DRIVE IN THE SLOW LANE, EXCEPT TO PASS. Its the safest and wisest place to drive. And in most states, I beleive it is the law.

If she's lane-hogging the left lane she needs to speed up or slow down and move over to the right. That's not courtesy, it's the law.

Well, how did you get there in the first place ?
You either sped up or slowed down to match the other persons speed, right ?
Even so, you should drive at whatever speed you feel comfortable with. If this puts you alongside another person for a long while, it doesn't really matter.
Courtesy doesn't come into it.

It seems fine until somebody comes up behind, then it is obstructing traffic! Somebody has to move! I get annoyed when I am passing, and the person speeds up, so I pull back in, then they slow down, I pass, they speed up, I pull back in, etc. i had one do that to me over and over one night years back, so I dropped back and turned off my lights. I then pulled up behind him, pulled out, put my lights back on, and floored it. He still tried to block me, but couldn't. He didn't know I had his plate number, and a cousin in the RCMP. I have no idea how many times he got pulled over for little things, and spot checks, but it was at least once a week for months. Every officer that pulled him over told him there was a report he was obstructing traffic, so he should watch his driving!
