Do not be scared...!!:)
You can try out the Fiama Di Wills range shampoos. I myself checked on the Everyday Mild one. Believe me it is very gentle on hair. It helps you even manage your hair comfortably. I think ITC also has a herbal shampoos and conditioners collection. I was just going through the link http://www.itcportal.com/newsroom/press_releases_15oct07.htm.

Mane N Tail is good. Here is a make at home recipe
Avocados contain vitamin B6 & vitamin E
The Ingredients
1 small jar of real mayonnaise
1/2 of an avocado
The Instructions
Put together in a medium bowl and squish together with your hands until it's a minty green color. Smooth into hair all the way to the tips. Put on a shower cap or wrap your head with saran wrap.
Leave on for 20 minutes. For deeper conditioning put a hot, damp towel around your head -over the saran wrap. And if you have really long hair and only need deep conditioning at the ends, cut the ingredients in half and apply only to the ends and just wrap them.
You can find a lot of good conditioner recipes at the source site.

Use Aussie 3 Minute Miracle. My mother has very dry, curly hair that splits easily. That's what she has used for years and seems to work for her. The instructions on the bottle say to use it once or twice a week, but she uses it every couple of days. It's available at most Walmarts.
(I use it too sometimes, but not all that often, since I don't really need to. Still - it's a very good conditioner.)

Joico K-Pak conditioner is the best for damaged, dry hair. It can be used as a deep treatment mask or as a daily conditioner.
Shiny Soft Hair Treatment
In a small bowl, mash and combine: 1 avocado (1/2 for shorter hair)
1 egg yolk
1/2 teaspoon olive oil
Apply to hair and allow to remain 30 minutes or longer, then shampoo and condition as usual.

If you have a budget, absolutely go for the Aussie brand. Aussie has phenomenal products that stick to their word.
If you wish to spend a bit more and have great results, go for the Rene Furterer Carthame; absolutely worth it.

humectress is a really good conditioner. it smooths and softens your hair. it can help calm your curls and moisturize your hair too. i have very rebellious hair too, and it really helps. but if for some reason it doesnt, refer to your stylist if you have one. she can really help find the perfect conditioner for you.
