If you think of them as "little brats" then you're never going to have an easy time getting them to smile. Remember you used to be a "little brat" yourself. What made you smile back then? I bet it wasn't people who thought you were a little brat.

Of course, kids can be brats, and I don't mean to imply that all kids are angels. That's in part due to an awful lot of uncaring or uneducated parents. But frankly, probably the best way to get anybody to smile is to be a friendly and happy person in dealing with them, and smiling at them first. If you're calling them "little brats" though, you probably aren't being genuine about being happy or smiling at them, and kids can smell you being fake like a dog can smell fear.

Perhaps taking portraits of kids isn't the right line of work for you? If you want to stay in photography, you might try contracting with law firms or corporations to do their employee or website photography...that way you will almost never have to worry about being sniffed out as a brat-hater by one of those little brats.

The first thing you must do is stop thinking of them as brats. They probably sense that you really don't want to be doing it. Attitude about your job is going to have to change. Little kids know if you are insincere.

I once saw a photographer of children (who took wonderful photos) at work. She had a long duster with a toy attached to the end of it, and she would "boop" the babies and little ones on the head with it, made them smile.

Edit.. and the dust mite allergy induced asthma doesn't kick in until after they go home !

#1 Change your attitude (it's even making ME cry) or get another job.

#2 Start a conversation with the child. Don't mention "taking a picture" ask them to "play" with you.

#3 NEVER tell them to say "Cheese", try "candy" "Puppy" or my favorite "stinky feet".

You can't.

Unless you changed your opinions of your "brats".
