Weatherby makes quality firearms and the 300Wby. is a fine cartridge. As for using it on deer, I'd stick with the .308. They both have the same bullet diameter and will both kill deer cleanly. The 300 has a higher muzzle velocity with the same bullet weight so it will shoot a little flatter. On the other hand it's a long action and it has a lot more recoil than the .308. The short action on the .308 means less travel when working the bolt and usually a shorter gun overall. I've shot many .308s and 2 300Wby mags and although the recoil is manageable with the 300 the .308 is a lot tamer. Either way you decide you won't be wrong and as far as "throwing away money" the Weatherby will hold it's value. Another factor you might want to consider is ammo. 300Wby. ammo is popular but any place that sells ammo will have the 308. Also the Wby ammo is more expensive than standard calibers. Good luck with your deer hunting.

Whoa!!! Talk about overkill!! Unless you are hunting in Montana, Wyoming or places where you are going to be taking loooong shots, this is WAY more gun than you need for deer. It will ruin a lot of meat and you will be part of the meat that is damaged. The 300 Weathreby Mag, has a greater recoil and muzzleblast than the .308. If you have a .308, you have all the gun that you need for deer. The .308 has plenty of punch and is a very accurate round. This is why the U.S. Marine Corps selected it as their caliber of choice for their snipers.

As a gun nut, I don't think a person has to have a reason to buy a particular gun beyone just wanting it. If you want it, fine, get it, but not for deer hunting. Keep that .308 'cuz "it just don't get no better than that." for deer size game.

If your local deer weigh a ton or so, it's a fine choice. In my area, they tend to be around 200 pounds, and the 308 is more caliber than you need. I have to admit I'll occasionally take something ridiculous out of the rack (my 8x68 comes to mind) just to give it some "exercise," but I always feel like I'm lugging artillery rounds with me, when the 6.5 or 7mm non-magnums are plenty of gun.

The 308 is entirely adequate for most anything you'll meet in the lower 48. You might want more gun, but you don't need more.

If you are buying it because you love the Weatherby then go for it, for many of use there's much more want than need in our firearms choice.

The down sides of the Weatherby Magnums are ammo availability and cost. But I find I don't shoot a hunting rifle enough that cost ever becomes a real issue.

Why would you want to do that if you already have a great Deer Rifle?* If you needed it I could understand, but you don't.* Why?, Why?, Why? The two (2)* longest shots made in combat on two (2)* enemy soldiers was made with a Winchester Model 70 in 308 caliber at 1500 meters.* Two less enemy.*

Yes it is very capable of killing a deer easily infact some people even use a .243 for deer hunting. the only reason i don't like that rifle is that it is a synthetic stock which i don't like as much as wooden. Also i'd rather use a remmington or browning or winchester.

Don't let anyone tell you that you are throwing away money on a Weatherby you don't need and will not use for deer. In my opinion, it is too big for deer.
