Well for starters, the type of gun cabinet that has the glass dorrs are more for display than security. They have a lock that can be comprimised fairly easily, not to mention the glass factor. If you are going for decoration, they do a wonderful job of displaying your finest firearms.
If you are looking for security, you should invest in a gun safe. They are much like a bank safe or home safe, built specifically for firearms/ammunition. They are usually fireproof and theft proof. These will cost much greater, but the security and safety of your firearms are worth it, in my opinion.
There are many "stackable" gun safes out there, but those are usually built cheaper and do not provide the security and fire proof options that the safe will. They serve the purpose of offering a lock and are much much cheaper. They look about the same as a gun safe on the outside but are thinner and lighter. (true safes are usually lined in brick or clay tile for the fireproof shell)
The average price for a gun cabinet is around $150-$900. The average I have seen for a quality gun safe is around $900 up to $3,000. The average for a "stackable" gun safe is around $100-$800. There are a few spots that can be much cheaper, but that is usually the going rate. Good luck.

Okay, first, let me warn you about gun cabinets, they are invitations to thieves. You might as well hang out a sign saying "Steal guns here". Gun cabinets are very pretty and I used to have one until a friend of mine had all of his guns stolen from his beautiful gun cabinet. It was absolutely beautiful with glass doors, lighting inside and all the things that are so attractive about them. It even had a lock on the door. The thieves just broke out the glass and took all of his guns. None were ever recovered. No telling where they ended up. No, I would NEVER recommend a gun cabinet for storing guns. You can buy a gun SAFE for about the same amount of money that a nice gun cabinet would cost. They may not be as attractive as a gun cabinet but your guy will not have his guns stolen. The way things are going now, if anyone steals guns from his cabinet, he could be held liable in a civil court for and loss or death caused by some criminal using his guns that were not stored securely. The same if a child found some way to open his gun cabinet and took out a gun and misused it. He could be held responsible. That's way too much responsibility to assume just for the nice appearance of a gun cabinet over a gun safe. Nope, shop for a gun safe not a gun cabinet.
If you want an idea of the prices, you can look at such sites as www.cabelas.com or www.baspro.com.

You need to get one that is heavy duty..My son has his nailed to the wall just in case an earthquake or something like that. So,it doesn't fall and crush a little one. Fire safe, heat safe. You can also maybe get a reduction in your home owners insurance, if you have a house and kids in the home. I bought my husband a really "nice" looking one 20 years ago.It is wooden and has frosted glass on the front.Well, the problem with that is everyone can see what type of gun you own. So take your time, and look around.

Search for "gun vault" or "safe" on the internet. Check the local and state laws where you live. Guns may be required to be locked in a minimum gage metal cabinet.

A solid wood gun cabinet would be nice. If you do get one with glass doors make sure the guns can be locked down on the inside. A nice one would be close to 250.00 to 500.00 or more. I'm sure there are cheaper ones.

Think about getting him a gun safe instead. It will make it a lot harder for a thief to steal his guns. Mine cost $700, but you can get a decent one for about $300.
