It doesn't matter. Sometimes, everybody is afraid of the dark just like people being afraid of heights.

There is nothing wrong with you I'm 40ish and sleep with a night light. I don't like to be disoriented when having to get up in the middle of the night. I have kids that travel in the dark to the restroom, ever been in a childs room whose floor you can't find in the daytime. They need a traveling light and so do I. After my forth broken toe trust me a night light was a blessing. When they are gone for the weekend I wouldn't be without one!
If you are embarassed about it just start saying you use it as a safety measure the more you say it the more you will begin to believe it and before you know it you will no longer be afraid of the dark.

Don't worry about it. The 20's is still young. Once you have children of your own, you will have more confidence in yourself and won't be afraid of the dark. If you need to use a night light, so what? It's not the end of the world. Everyone has something. It's probably just a habit you've developed. Other people have far worse ones than that. I bet if you had a spouse or "significant other" lying next to you, you wouldn't need that night light. I remember feeling quite insecure in my early 20's. I didn't have a night light, but I had other issues. It's part of being young. Don't be so hard on yourself!

From what you wrote here, I think your preference is to have a night light. You say that you are not really afraid of the dark. In order for some peolpe to sleep they need COMPLETE darkness & others need some light. I do not know about how you slept as a baby (light or not). Please consider this... Babies who have been raised in families where they vacuumed, clanked pots & pans & lived normal life while the baby was sleeping grew up to be able to sleep in the same environment. Conversely, babies that had families that tiptoed around, took the phone off the hook & muffled regular sounds as they slept grew up to be able to sleep with almost not even the sound of a fan or clock intheir bedroom. Conclusion... Some things in our lives are what we prefer & others are what we were conditioned to like or prefer. Try not to be too hard on yourself. If you are truly scared & panic in the dark then there is a reason why your body does this. If it is something that really bothers you & interferes with your quality of life then you may want to address it.

Everyone has fears. I'm not totally afraid of the dark, but I am more comfortable with the TV left on or a hall light. It's not so much that you are afraid of the dark- but moreso they connect people who are afraid of the dark with being afraid of the unknown. So, you are afraid of what *could be* in your room where you are sleeping and very vulnerable. Honestly, everyone feels more comfortable being secure- and your security lies in light. This is nothing to be ashamed of, but something that works for you.

I still sleep with a night light as well. I have an insanely powerful imagination, and I live in a rural area, so the slightest sound makes me think WILD ANIMAL, or CRAZY REDNECK MURDERER (that's why I also sleep with a knife close-by). I also have bad eyesight in general, so in darkness its even worse and can play tricks on me, whereas with some light I can at least tell if something's there or not. Sometimes I don't have it on at all, depending.
So yeah, no worries about it man, no big deal.

i am 21 years old and i hate sleeping in the dark ...at my house i have a night light in the hallway and i always sleep with my door open so that the light shines in...i can't fall asleep without some sort of light... for me it is because i can't stand not being able to see what around me and when I am in the dark I feel like I see things that aren't really there and i just get freaked out...but if someone else is sleeping in my room i dont mind sleeping in the dark....don't feel embarrassed ....everyone has that one thing that they can't handle and in both of our cases it is the dark...trust me it could be something way worse...

It is a natural feeling to fear what we do not know. When it is dark you cannot see what is going on around you. Your fear is your brain personifying this natural tendency. It is just like someone jumping when someone comes up behind them or covering their eyes in a scary moment of a movie. Everyone has fears and there is nothing wrong with that. It is logical to want to see what is around you and it is not wimpy or unstable. Do not worry about it. We all fear something and we all must find a way to cope with our fears. Your night light is your way of coping with your fear of the dark and that is very logical.

I'm 56 and still sleep with a night light. I don't like not being able to get my spatial bearings immediately. It hasn't got anything to do with anything except possible being disoriented in the dark. Lots of people are.

i get afraid of the dark too, I sleep with the tv on for a light, it could be because you feel suffocated in the dark, it doesnt matter what age you are, but maybe you feel scared from movies you see, or fear of being alone?
