It is a compilation of writings by prophets that lived in the americas. It was a lot bigger, but a prophet by the name of mormon (hence the name) abridged the writings of these individual prophets into a more readable size of the important parts of these enormous amounts of records. Joseph Smith was led to them years and years later and translated them into english.

I dont know why believing in the Bible is so credible, but believing that God actually had prophets in other parts of the world that might have written down their records and teachings as well is so incredible.

Why cant you people just shut up that dont have an answer to this question. The questioner wanted to know what the Book of Mormon was about, not why you think you are better than all mormons and why we are all brainwashed cultists going to hell.

The Bible: 1,002 - Book of Mormon: Zero
Rick Branch
Actually, it must be admitted at the outset, that there may only be a 1,001 cases of archaeological evidence for the Bible. However, for the Book of Mormon, the precise number is still Zero!
In Time magazine, under the heading "Score One for the Bible," the following extremely fascinating information was given:
"It is one of the most dramatic events chronicled in the Old Testament, but for generations scholars have debated whether the Israelites' assault on Jericho was fact or myth. Over the past three decades, the consensus has gone against the biblical version."
"But archaeologist Bryant Wood says that the city's walls could have come tumbling down at just the right time to match the biblical account. While that does not prove that the event happened, it does give plausibility to the Old Testament version."
Time magazine continues by explaining, Wood, an ancient-pottery expert now at the University of Toronto, dates the pottery found at Jericho to 1400 B.C., which is the same time some scholars date Joshua's battle.
In addition to the new pottery findings, "A thick layer of soot at the site, which according to radioactive carbon-14 dating was laid down about 1400 B.C., supports the biblical idea that the city was burned, not simply conquered."
"Finally, Egyptian amulets found in Jericho graves can be dated to around 1400 B.C. as well. Says Wood: `It looks to me as though the biblical stories are correct,'" (March 5, 1990, p. 59).
While there continues to be mounting evidence for the historicity of the biblical record, the Book of Mormon is still seeking that first authenticated scrap of evidence.
The Bible contains numes of cities, rivers, nations, etc. - nearly all of which have been proven archaeologically to have existed.
However, while the Book of Mormon contains names of cities, rivers and nations, none have ever been found.
Ambiguous statements and grandiose claims have appeared in numerous LDS and RLDS journals, but, to date, not a single claim has been substantiated. The following is but one such example.
"The massive fortification of the site dating around AD 825 surpass anything found in Maya archaeology to date. The Book of Mormon description in Mormon 4:10 is being confirmed," (Zarahemla Record, August 1989 p. 7).
However, the Mormon 4:10 passage is dated, by the LDS Church itself, to be AD 364-375! A difference of 450 years.
While 450 years may not sound like much, it must be remembered that neither New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or even Arlington, Texas was here 450 years ago. Because something is in existence 450 years after the fact, does not necessitate that it was also there 450 years earlier.
Does it not seem strange that if, as Mormonism claims, the Bible is the scripture for the Old World, and the Book of Mormon is the scripture for the New World; and the same God inspired both, again as Mormonism claims, that the score would be, Bible 1,002 and Book of Mormon, Zero?

The Mormons claim that their book is what completes the Bible. The Bible itself strongly disagrees with what that. Please read Revelations 22:19-18. From what I've read, their book was written by their founder Joseph Smith, a man who had a mental case (hope you get what I mean). So for me, the book of Mormons are a bunch of lies.

One book in the Book of Mormon is missing, its the book of Lehi, a wife of one of Joseph Smith scribes ran off with it,
The BofM is a great story about how some jews came over here on a noah's ark-like boat and got there skin color changed by being bad (cursed) and they became the indians.

Well...

The Book of Mormon has a book called Mormon, but there is also 1, 2, 3 and 4 Nephi, Alma, Jacob, Enos, Jerome, Omni...etc.

There are 15 total books. Then there is Doctrine and Covenants(which is like our guidelines, some church history, etc.), Pearl of a Great Price which has 2 other books in it....

Also we do have the Bible, in case you did not know.

---------

James
The texts were written on golden tablets, not stone, they were not written in egyptian hieroglyphis, and Mormons don't have preachers...

You've already got some good answers (and some not so good).

I'll just add these links to the title page and indroduction to The Book of Mormon (from the official Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints website). It's a pretty quick read; and answers your question well:

The Book of Mormon also contains several books compiled together (the most famous being the Book of Mormon). All of the texts within The Book of Mormon were discovered after Jesus died, written on stone tablets in Egyptian hieroglyphics. They were then translated into modern languages. That's what Mormon preachers told me at least - they tried to give me the Book of Mormon, but I said that I'd just look the book up on the Mormon website ;-) Ha ha

The Book revealed after Bible was the Quran ---- Read it , Its crystal clear. It is the words of God directly, No version of the Quran are availble , It is in its original state.

If you go to buy a Bible , the shopkeeper asks you which version , Did god reveal all these versions. NO.

The words of man and God got mixed up hence these versions exists.

So to guide MANKIND God revealed his LAST BOOK --- THE QURAN. Read it and Assess it , you will find it to be form the same LORD who revealed the previous books of MOSES, DAVID, JESUS peace be on them all

Same thing, just books that were supposedly written to the Indians in Central America and then buried in Illinois about 1900 years ago.
