Why do I get so nervous when I see my dentist? I get all shivery and sometimes feel sick even when I'm in the waiting room. Sounds silly, but it really does bug me now. I thought it would go away once I got older, but it hasn't.

I think you have to get to the root of your problem. Ask yourself, why are you really scared of the dentist? The pain? That's temporary and honestly, dentists are so concerned about not hurting you, they make sure they don't. Is it just the fear of the unknown? Did you have some experience as a kid?

For me, I used to hate the dentist as a kid. And I was scared too. I think it was fear of the unknown. I think that office I went to was just not that inviting. Cold and dreary. But as an adult, it's not my favorite thing to do, but I like having clean teeth. And look at it this way, going every 6 months for the regular cleaning and check-up will hopefully keep those big problems from arising.

And try and find a really good dentist. Ask your friends, etc. Because my dentist now is so cool, friendly, and I trust her that I actually look forward to seeing her. She's like a good friend. And everyone that works there is so nice, they got TV's in all the rooms for you to watch, you can listen to music, it's cool.

I do not like the dentist at all. I don't fear the dentist though. I fear the hygienist who I know is going to make it hurt. The tools aren't bad at all. Good dentists are using a new set of tools on each patient and if the equipment is state of the art, it is mostly painless. Except for when the hygienist is scraping plaque.

Trust me i know what you feel, the same things happen to me when i have to visit that place, honestly there is nothing you can do, just think that in a short time you will get out of there and that they are doing that for your own good ! Just try to relax maybe by listening to music while you wait, and think about something else. Hope it helps you!

This does not sound silly because it's a very normal and expected reaction concerning doctors and dentists. Don't let it bother you but just do what must be done even in the face of fear. Take really good care of your dental health so that your visits can be more routine than absolute necessities.

Shop around for YOUR dentist, one you want to go see (one of my favorites was in his 30's and played whatever music I wanted to hear during my appointment). Dentists are really people and all have their own personalities. Some are very laid back, some are to the point and clinical. Figure out what bothers you about dentists, go to your phone book, call them on the phone and talk to them, grill them and you'll know. You should feel comfortable with your dentist.
