You may not have to have a catheter. To know whether or not you will get one, I have to know what type of surgery your are having done.
I know sometimes we have our patients in the hospital urinate before surgery and then when they reverse the anesthesia, they have them void in PACU.
Sometimes they wait until you are under anesthesia and put it in after you fall asleep and remove it before you wake up.
You can request it and they will listen. Men are catheter phobic and I understand.
Catheters are not comfortable at all. I will not lie, but the discomfort (urgency) or feeling like you have to void only last a little bit.

I awoke with a catheter after surgery. The experience of having a catheter was not bad enough to delay much-needed surgery. It wasn't painful; just bothersome because I hadn't expected to need one. I am also a nurse and have inserted many catheters. The procedure is much easier on both patient and nurse if the patient relaxes as much as possible. Zone out, if necessary. It's actually nothing to be afraid of. I hope that your surgery goes smoothly, and that you will have a quick recovery.

There are many kinds of catheter's. I take chemo every week and have an IV catheter inserted in my arm. It does not hut and there is nothing to woory about. You will be fine and it will be over before you know what happened.

depending on surgery, they usually put it in AFTER you're under anestheia. Had numerous surgeries. Had kidney stone once and they put cathetar in while awake, its not nearly as bad as you think it is. Trust me, been there done that.

I had surgery and I remember them pulling out a urinary cath. while I was in recovery. I did not even know it was there.

It isn't painful, but it is uncomfortable. Best to get it done and over with.
