we live in a society where mammoth 4WD's dominate our roads, if i was to purchase a little smart car or a mini, what are my chances if i have a 4WD crash into me?

When I last visited Europe, I noticed that Smart cars did not really have too much trouble dealing with other vehicles. Sure they are small, but that also makes them more maneuverable. They are small enough to get into tight spaces and out of the way of an oncoming vehicle much easier than a longer car would be able to do. If a large vehicle is coming at you fast enough to harm you in a Smart car, then odds are they are going fast enough to harm you in a larger car, as well.

That doesn't happen that often when you consider the number of mini's on the road and the number of 4WD's but when it does happen it makes the news. Remember you will still be on the road while the 4WWD's will be pulling into every other gas station to fill up again. You will be fine and have a lot more money in your pocket when gas reaches $4 a gallon.

I drive a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, it's great on gas.
As long as you stay off the cell phone
when you drive and
watch out for all the idiots,
you might stand a chance.
I think with the price of gas soaring
through the roof,
you will probably start to see less
and less of these gas guzzlers on the highways.
I've been driving for over 45 years
and I've only had three accidents
where idiots have run into me.
These all occurred in Mississippi.

1. 1987, I was a passenger in a taxi cab
& we had a hit & run.

2. 1990, I was a passenger in a friends truck
and we were rear ended by the Sheriff's girl friend.

3. 1996, I was driving my hubby's little
Nissan truck and a kid with no license
or insurance broad-sided the
passenger side of the truck.
He ran a red light.

I've been driving in Texas for the past year
&
so far they have not tried to run over me, yet.

You have to learn to drive defensively,
out of self-preservation,
otherwise you will be just another statistic.

for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Now, in a car smash, there are two vehicles who collide with each other. There speed needs to be brought to a halt, but in order to do that, it needs to dissipate the kinetic energy, hence the damage to each car. The more mass and speed involved in the crash, the worse the damage.
Therefore, a car crash involving two 4x4, will be worse than a crash with a smaller vehicle.

So as for car size, its not really an issue, as if everyone drove 4x4's, the crashes would be just as bad. If everyone drove trucks.....well you get my drift.

As for the smart car itself, they have a high safety rating, due to there very well designed safety cell for the driver, and passenger. google "5gear smart car crash" on youtube, and you should get a video where they test one.
hope this helps
cheers

If you are scared, then don't buy one. You attract what you think about. Also, read up on them. They are not suggested for people who are on the highway a lot. That said, little cars like Miatas and Honda Civics, Mini coopers and so on are already on the road with no noticeable spiking of problems. If you are a city dweller, then sure, go for it. I happen to have a couple trucks and an SUV and I have never had a problem seeing a little car on the road. It think that is somewhat of an urban legend.

It's a risk you have to accept if you buy a smaller car. These smart cars aren't exactly safe and I see them appearing everywhere and I'm almost certain they will be made illegal after the death toll rises. You could be killed just by being rear ended in a regular sedan, what do you think would happen in one of these little roller skates? I want one too but I am frightened as well.

I AGREE WITH YOU AND I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU DON'T BUY EITHER ONE ONE THEM.

I SAW ONE OF THOSE SMART-CARS HIT A POTHOLE AND THE WHOLE CAR LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO FLY OR SOMETHING.
