Versus being single.
What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Dave:
I have no desire to get married right now, but regardless do not appreciate your judgment. I was just curious. I will eventually be marrying someone in the Navy and was curious about what I would be in for once it happened. CLEARLY I'm not getting married to someone for the benefits, I'm not that shallow and I definitely wouldn't go through the strains of a military relationship for such a ridiculous reason.

Both parties? or just one? Before one or both leave for boot camp/OCS? or after a few years in the service and they have decided on a military career?

Married:
Advantages (for the spouse)
Free or low-cost housing for family
Low-cost medical and dental
Support groups
Lots of activities
Chance of travel... free or at reduced rates depending upon mode
A steady income which (as one advances) becomes quite livable.

Disadvantages (for the spouse)
Long separations
Worry about the safety of the one deployed and about the one at home
Financial problems -- especially for young enlisted personnel
Unexpected kids -- adding to the financial problems and stress
Cheating on both sides... don't ask me why... I've never figured it out... and both have the same excuse... "I'm here alone (responsible for the house and raising kids/facing danger daily) while he/she is (with his/her friends hitting the beach and enjoying travel/at home with her/his family and friends)." One of the greatest casualties in the military is marriages between people in the early years of their marriage.

Single: (also for the one in the Navy... married or not)
Advantages:
Travel
Adventure
A steady income
Practically no expenses
Free medical and dental.
Free air fare... or at reduced rates.
Free room and board... or at subsidized rates
No matter where you're stationed... if you don't like it... you only have to hang in there a couple of years.

Disadvantages:
Chance of injury or death... same as in a civilian job.
Sometimes rather spartan living conditions.
Long separations from family and friends.

The financial advantage is you will either get base family housing instead of having to live in a barracks or single officers quarters or you will get a housing allowance at the "with dependents" rate which is a few hundred more than the single rate. However, the actual cost will be greater as two will be living on the salary of one, assuming your spouse does not work.

The emotional advantage is great and would exist even if you were not in the Navy. Married men live longer than single men. It would give you comfort to know when you go to sea there is someone home waiting for you.

From the way you phrased your question, I do not think you are ready to be married. You are too interested in the advantages and disadvantages which shows you have doubts about getting married.

If your married you'll make more money. If your not married you will make less money but you wont have to worry about anyone while your out on boats and you wont feel guilty about all the morale boosting you'll be doing for the rest of the ship.

regrettably no. the militia (all branches) has to circulate by ability of federal regulation. the federal government does no longer understand gay marriage so the militia can no longer the two. till the 1996 protection of Marriage Act is repealed in Congress, all gay service individuals would be taken care of as single squaddies. meaning no reward for spouses, and not greater pay.

Sure, you get more money but you have a wife to worry about. try it, when you're in the middle of an ocean and won't see her for a few more months.
