i'm a buddhist. but i did study confucianism especially the history of confucianism before.

the reason why confucianism grow is because, it taught the people to be obedient, selfless, grateful and loyal. these are all very important elements that politicians wanted to cultivate among the people.

when people believe in confucianism, the society become very easy to control. in fact if consider from the philosophy, or religion aspect, confucian sucks. in case you don't know, when confucianism just started in the ancient china, it was being despiced by other sects of philosophers. they were seen as a bunch of people who only know how to curry-flavor and promote superstitions.

today, though some portions of the teaching have become out-dated (the ritual part, sexual discriminating part), but you can still see people promoting, encouraging confucianism, especially CEOs, bosses of companies, politicians. they are not truely being religion, but rather hypocrites.

Chinese have three religions: Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. None of them talk about god or heaven. In Confucianism, there are only four don'ts:
See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, and do no evil.
