In the bible, Genesis is the account of our creation. Let's for a moment assume the bible is the infallible word of god-- I mean, if it is devinely inspired, don't you think god would not allow it to be misinterpreted? And for those who make excuses for this unexplainable chain of events.... if I am not to believe THIS part of the bible, why should I believe ANY of it. It is either right----or it is wrong. Period.

So.... how is it there is light before the sun? And there was day and night before the sun and moon?

Genesis 1
1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

READ IT. THERE WAS LIGHT BEFORE THE SUN! Explain that!

2007-11-10 15:47:58 · update #3

I swear, one of my peeves is when people here answer the question without even reading it in its entirety.

If you believe Genesis is god's word, spend just a minute to read the verses I've provided. There was light first....then on day four there was the sun and the moon.

And for those of you who like to conveniently interpret it to mean "god" is the light....don't you think Genesis could just as easily said something like, "in the beginning there was the Light of God". This is why it is so difficult (if not impossible) to have an intelligent conversation with believers. One one occasion they twist the words to fit their argument. And on another occasion they insist that the bible be taken literally... when, for instance, they find something that condems people they don't like.

Oh please , put aside your bible for a while and go back to school, study physics for a while and you can answer your own question, it is more important that you investigate the answer for yourself.

You appear to be stuck in the middle ages.

Your question is too black and white, you shouldn't merely dismiss the bible just because your interpretation is not literal,
much of the bible is open to a wide spectrum of interpretation.
In answer to the question that I think you are asking about believing all or nothing, I would say "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater". Sorry if that sounds flippant.
Even the Catholic church now pays credence to a large part of evolutionary theory and theology is moving forward all the time so interpretation at least is not set in stone.
Unlike the Qur'an, the bible is not generally claimed to be the the word of God, it is incomplete and with at least 26 gospels excluded from our modern bible (mostly for political rather than theological reasons).
Your faith is a personal issue, should you decide to believe, it is a long road to discovery, or else you can choose to be like sheep and follow a particular prescribed dose of religious dogma.
Or else you may dismiss Christianity as some form of mass neuroses or superstition that fulfills an innate requirement and is part of the human condition for those with a specific genetic make up and/or environment.

There's a somewhat technical explanation of how it could have happened on this website....
http://www.creationscience.com/onlinebook/FAQ113.html#wp1885554
The first light of creation days one, two and three was caused by gravitational forces of the young earth forming causing radiation of electromagnetic energy that would have produced light. Or it could have been that on day one of creation, God initiated the laws of nature like gravity and electromagnetism and created matter which may have caused the light also. The Bible was written so that people of all ages could understand what He meant by "light" rather than writing highly technical terms that we use like "electromagnetic forces and gravitational forces" but we now have the ability to understand how it happened scientifically. God's Word can be trusted to be true.

Light is energy. A God who can do all the things listed can make light without a light source! The light God made on the first day was light energy. Verse 14 tells us that the lights in the sky were formed not only to separate the night from day, but to mark the seasons and days and years. He made light on the 1st day, but on the 4th day what was made was for our benefit.

Try for yourself and write a book that explains mankind and the heavens from beginning to end and see if everyone understands it, just because you don't understand it doesn't make his word un true. On the first day he made the sun and moon and as they done their cycle they came to be day two. now to make things harder to understand, God rested on the 7th day, we are living in the 7th day because a day with God is like a thousand years for us and he hasn't created anything since he made Eve. and if you trace the bible you will find that Adam was made just over 7000 years ago. which also shows the end of this system of things will end soon and a new system will start and God will start creating things that we will really love.

You are assuming that light had to be the Sun... Pretty narrow view, don't you think? Assuming that God is omnipotent wouldn't it be a pretty small thing for him to make it light without a specific star? This is a pretty weak argument for you to be daring folks with. Surely you can do better than this!
The very language you use, the way you prefaced the whole thing by intimating that if you're argument is true the whole of scripture is negated indicates that you think your weak position is some sort of trump card. Frankly, this is one of the easiest objections I've seen in a long time.

You see, the WONDERFUL thing about this is that God, who is SOVEREIGN and all-powerful, can do ANYTHING.

Did you know that God's purity emmits its own light so bright, that it would kill a man to look upon it? He told Moses so, when Moses asked to gaze on the face of God Almighty. And yet, God is not made of the elements of the Sun, is He?

Since God is the Creator and Maker of the entire Universe with billions and billions of stars and galaxies, do you not think that He can make something as simplistic as 'light' before He created the Sun? Such powers are way beyond the comprehension of our finite minds.

Because you asked such a question, I don't really expect you to accept my answer, and that's okay. I believe in that All Powerful God whose love for me makes me so happy. I hope that someday you can find that same happiness and accept your Creator's sovereignty.

:-)

Our sun is not the oldest star in the universe. There was light before our sun was made. The earth was formed after the sun was formed. The men who wrote the bible did not know anything about science. But don't blame them, no one knew anything about science at that time. That is another reason that the bible should not be taken literally.

You use the words Right-Wrong-and Believe.
In my opinion you need to read the entire text and then think more about the word- Interpretation.
Man was given free will, I think this would include your decision to interpret the word your own way.
Right or wrong, hmmm who decides that and when? The Holy Spirt is sent upon you for guidance. In my humble opinion I believe God agrees with you, it "IS" either right or wrong.
Keep your faith nurished and strong.

did you get the 3-d glasses that came with the early genesis ...? you have to wear the special effects glasses before the sun or it doesn't make sense ...lol must of been a budget cutback when did he create money? oh it's no wonder they have tithes and no glasses . I just throw mine up in the air and what doesn't fall back down is his. and if god created all of that why does the government and the church claim ownership?

The answer is simple - there was light which had a source other than the sun, moon and stars. There are a lot of things we don't know about how the universe worked before the fall of Adam, and before the flood. What we do know is that it was *not* the same as it is now.
