One that teaches directly from the Bible and backs everything up with scripture. Keep searching and praying for your desires to Jesus. He will examine your heart and if you are sincere He will lead you to the truth. There can be only one truth. Do not listen to anybody else except God and his word.

I would suggest reading the Bible, especially the New Testament and see what you feel it says. Go with a denomination that does NOT question the authenticity of parts of the Bible. Avoid the Apocrypha, as it was not part of the originally accepted Bible up until the Council of Trent. I happen to be Missouri Synod Lutheran, but even I have a few slight differences with them. Look at how a denomination says you are saved. Works should not be a part of it. Baptism and the Lord's supper have been interpreted in different ways from symbolic to means of grace. You may want to talk to a minister of various churches and have them explain these key issues. By the way, LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) is far more conservative than ELCA. We believe the Bible is the infallible word of God. I do not claim to have all truth or the perfect denomination, but through MUCH questioning and study, I feel the most comfortable with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The questioning part is important. Find what makes the most sense for you. Have them show you from a reliable Bible where they get their beliefs, and question question question. I always asked WHY we believe such and such. In fact, I still do!

I say first, pray that God will plant you where He wants you to bloom, and then with His guidance, you will find a bible teaching church dedicated to the loving service of others.

Don't worry so much about the window dressing; don't worry about what name is on the sign outside: look for what is in the hearts of the pastor and the members. If you don't see the bright burning light of true, sacrificial, agape Christian love in their eyes, you might want to keep looking.

Having said that, there is no perfect church; no church body that doesn't have its immature Christians, its false Christians and its wolves in sheeps clothing, but never accept any of these from the pastor, no matter how many books he's sold or how charismatic he is.

The most positive attribute of my non-denominational church is that it teaches the Bible verse by verse, leaving nothing out.

Having come from a Catholic background, where the scriptures are de-emphasized and, when they are used, often taken out of context or reworded to support some non-Bibilcal Catholic doctrine, this is a very important aspect of my church to me.

I am also not expected to take the pastor's word for what is preached, but am invited (even expected) to be doing my own reading of the Bible seeking the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to understand what is the most awesome and living book of all time, the very word of God, the Holy Bible; God's love letter to me and to all mankind.

Final piece of advice: once you start attending a church, get involved in ministries. We gather together so that, as the body of Christ, we can strengthen one another and bear one anothers burdens. You'll also see the real heart of people; whether they truly love the Lord, or only raise their voices and hands in praise on Sundays because that's what everyone else is doing.

There is a church you should check out. There was a Jesus movement that began in the hippie days in California and from it was born a church called Calvary Chapel. Since the first church started with 25 or so people that met in a tent, there has been an explosion of over 1200 churches across the US and in other parts of the world. The teaching is balanced and is Bible-based.The teaching is chapter-2-chapter, vs-by-vs, precept upon precept. If you get on the web, type in the name "calvary chapel, costa mesa, CA " and that will bring to the home page and will help you to locate a church near you. It is very important that you are sure that you go to a church that the teaching is Bible-based. Also make sure when visiting a church you give each one a few tries just in case they have a guest speaker.....Most churches can provide their doctrine for you if you contact them.

It really depends on what you believe, and what makes you happy. Denominations span a wide range of diverse traditions. Typically, folks who call themselves a "brand new Christian" fall into the Evangelical category, so you might be happy with the Baptists. If you believe in the Rapture and what-not, you will want a Dispensationalist group like the Assemblies of God. If you like a more traditional flavor, you might be interested in the Lutherans or Methodists. If you are interested in theology, you might try the Presbyterians. If you are a Bush supporter, go Baptist.

Now, my opinion is that you should go with something hyper-conservative (from a Christian perspective), and check out the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholics, or Episcopalians.

I don't belong to a church, have visited several diffeent kinds though.

Depends on you and your likes and dislikes....for me, I prefer the smaller the better....one that meets in a basement of a school, for instance....of a Pentecostal type Church....down to earth, no "fake" smiles that look like the person's face will crack if they hold it on too long, lol, and not so quick to judge anyone on dress, marital status, riches or non, etc.,....not just my own experience but having seen what has happened to others in the Churches I have visited too. :)

Otherwise...asking God would be a good idea....and trust His choice when He gives it :)

Positive attributes?

Nothing is watered down, vague, or contradictory.

Everything comes directly from the Bible, not a man's storehouse of personal perspectives.

The Spirit of God dwells here.

Please look at the web site Mormon.org. I would also like you to look up The Articles of Faith on that web site or L.D.S.org. This should explain way better than I could our religion. The biggest positive aspect of the church as far as I am concerned is how friendly the people are as a whole. Most of the people truly try to live the way Jesus Christ teaches us too.
