You'll only except the answers of people that agree with you so whats the point really, i could say that i agree but i'll say how i really feel, the real native tongue of this land is the language that the native americans spoke so therefore english is only the true language of england not america, if you can't handle spanish being a language of america two bad deal with it, other countries learn the english language and don't whine about it, learn from them

No, it does not offend me that some would rather speak in there native language, for whatever reason. It really doesn't bother me that I have to press 1 for English. It is more annoying to me that I can hardly ever talk to an actual person on the phone without pressing several #'s first. The fact of the matter is English is, by far, the most common language spoke here. It seems to me that it would be in a persons best interest to be able to speak it, or at least try to speak it. Lets be honest, the language barrier is not the real problem. The real problem is the lack of wanting to be an American. I would not want anyone to forget were they have come from. However, if you are here, in the U.S., and you would like to make it your home. Then what is the problem with learning the language?

In all the years I have lived here, I still cannot understand the extreme reluctance that yanks show and brag about it, concerning their own ignorance.
It makes no sense. In my country you were respected as a cultured person when you knew foreign languages. The more you knew, the better.
But here, yanks scream, tear their clothes, have a terrible tantrum, etc, etc, when they hear Spanish. They ABSOLUTELY refuse to learn.
They INSIST, INSIST, and INSIST in boasting of being ignorant.
Well, you cannot make people be reasonable.
Anyway, since the use of Spanish keeps growing, they have several choices:
1 - Keep screaming, and having tantrums
2 - Go somewhere where only english is spoken
3 - Realize that times are different and learn Spanish ( for many this is not an option )
4 - Commit suicide
I sure feel sorry for you, but think that this is what happened to the Native Americans when the British came here. Now you are getting a taste of your own medicine.
Enjoy !

Of course not. First off, this is a ***** of a language to learn. Us native speakers don't realize it because we got to learn it the easy way, but it's not a proper language at all. It's what happens when a Germanic grammar system smashes up against French vocabulary, gets all mixed up for several centuries, and then proceeds to conquer peoples on most continents and absorb their languages. Every so-called "rule" we have has at least one or two exceptions; most have dozens. Our spelling system is just nonsense, and the synonyms- oh, the synonyms! Actually, we don't even have synonyms, because they all have slightly different shades of meaning ("pretty" vs "handsome" vs "beautiful", for instance). So, most of the immigrants here would really like to learn our language, but it's almost impossible for them.
Secondly, I like the diversity. It's what made the US strong in the first place. Am I supposed to get p!ssy about the French-speaking people in Louisiana or Maine, or the German and Polish speakers in my state of Pennsylvania? What about the people speaking Yiddish or Italian in New York? And, heck, who should be more annoyed, the Native Americans who speak their mother tongues, or me that they don't exclusively speak English? Why should it even matter to me, when the most inconvenience I have is pressing one to continue in English?
Anybody else amused by the poor grammar and often poor English used by the most vocal proponents of English as the official and only language thing? No? Just me? Okay, then.

well when Americans visit other country everything is translated to English....why should they do that for us but we can't do it for them....yeah I agree with u about they should learn English but u gotta think about the ppl who want to get driver licenses....some test are translated to different languages...now if it was all in English and they don't read English very well.....they can't do very well on the tests. Stuff like that is important to have translated. by the way why shouldn't ppl learn how to speak a different Language. Are u mad b/c u didn't try to open your mind up to different cultures when u were in college/highschool? GIRL GET OVER IT...IF YOU WERE IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY U WOULD WANT SOME THINGS TRANSLATED TO ENGLISH....very bias
I'm not offended but they should learn English...if they don't want to learn it then thats their @$$. I just don't think its a big deal if they don't want to learn...if they want to be 2nd class citizens so be it. But I still believe your feelings are very bias. English is the most common spoken Language in the world..thats what point I'm trying to make...u could go anyway and there will be ppl there to help u..but ppl who speak other Languages...they don't have a chance unless there's some translation around...oh u can go into a good college without speaking spanish...

If the government spent less on translation services (In England, they spend hundreds of millions doing so), or even better, none at all, then the money could be pumped into the National Health servive (NHS) and public schools. Everyone is always complaining about 'how deprived' public services are, but are happy for the government to waste money on translations. There was a woman on TV, who said as she moved to England, and had become a citizen, it is her right not to learn the language, and to have a translator.

I don't know if its true that you can't get a good job or into a good college without speaking Spanish -- I graduated from a good college (of course that was in 1980, maybe things have changed since then) and have held a series of white collar professional jobs since then without speaking a word of Spanish.
But I do agree that immigrants to this country should be required to learn English. When my ancestors came to this country at the turn of the 20th Century from Eastern Europe, they spoke Yiddish and Russian -- and nothing was translated for them -- if they wanted to work, if they wanted to get along in this country, they HAD to learn at least some English. Immigrants to this country of my great-grandparents' generation were anxious to learn English and to become Americans. I don't understand why we've become so accomodating to immigrants (here illegally at that!!) who refuse to learn English and refuse to become Americans. If I were to emigrate to Italy or Spain or The Netherlands, for example -- I would expect to have to learn Italian or Spanish or Dutch in order to live and work in that country. I certainly wouldn't demand or expect that everything be made available for me in English.

I think that if you are going to live in a country where most of the people speak a different language than you do, then you should learn their language. They should not be expected to learn your language to accommodate you. I have ancestors who came to this country and knew only German. They managed to learn English. Why can't you do the same?

With all my heart. I am an immigrant myself ( from Europe), and I speak only English. I've never tried to implement my own language into other people's lives.
There was a time when Irish,Germans, Jews, Italians, Chinese had a significant number of people living in the US, and nobody demanded to make their own language as a second national one. It just sounds Racists, impolite and rude.
People have no shame and politicaians use it.
We should not support the politicians who play the race card.
Period.
Hypocrats.

You can't get a good job without knowing ENGLISH here, NOT SPANISH. I went to Vietnam. I didn't have to know Spanish there. I went to Norway. I didn't have to speak Spanish there either. Sorry, but in both cases, I do have relatives in both countries mentioned above who do speak those languages. I go everywhere speaking English.
