Huge difference. They are both prescribed to relieve anxiety, but they are in different drug classes.
XANAX
"Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. It belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. It works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA)." (http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-9824-Xanax+Oral.aspx?drugid=9824&drugname=Xanax+Oral)
Xanax is drug to which one can become addicted.
"Though it is very unlikely to occur, this medication can also result in abnormal drug-seeking behavior (addiction/habit-forming). Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed. Properly stop this medication when so directed. This will lessen the chances of becoming addicted.
When used for an extended period, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well." (Same source as above.)
LEXAPRO
Lexapro is the most selective of the SSRIs and, as such, is quite effective at relieving anxiety yet has few side effects and is non-addictive.
"Escitalopram is an antidepressant (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-SSRI) used to treat depression and anxiety. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters such as serotonin) in the brain. Escitalopram may improve your feelings of well-being and energy level and decrease nervousness." (http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-63990-Lexapro+Oral.aspx?drugid=63990&drugname=Lexapro+Oral)
PS MOST SSRIs can make patients feel *either* more anxious or less anxious. One doesn't know which way it will work for a patient until he or she tries it. Lexapro is the only SSRI for which I have not heard of a patient becoming more anxious, but if it happens, do tell your doctor right away.
Personally, Zoloft and Wellbutrin both made me more anxious but Lexapro worked to relieve anxiety right away!

Lexapro is an antidepressant which is commonly used in the treatment of some anxiety disorders. Xanax is part of a group of drugs called benzodiazepines, which are highly addictive, and generally should only be prescribed for a short period of time, for extreme anxiety/panic attacks. Lexapro is taken on a daily basis, and takes a while to build up in your system but it is in my opinion, the safer option.

Lexapro is an antidepressant and Xanex is for anxiety. Lexapro will correct the brain chemistry problems that cause the depression, actually fixing the problem, assuming it is the right medication for you. Xanax will make you feel better for about four hours, then the symptoms return. You can get addicted to Xanax, but not Lexapro. So, Lexapro is a long term medication and Xanax is for acute anxiety that needs help right now.

That is not working. At first it makes you calm and relaxed. If you take enough you will sleep real well. If you take too much you won't remember much of what happens to you, you can do things and not remember at all. Then after a very short period of time it doesn't work as well, so you take more.
