I have had clinical depression for many years.
It took me a long time to find the right doctor to help me, but he has saved my life. You will benefit from the right professional help, but it may take time and money to find the right people and treatment for you.
Some things that help me:
-daily exercise
-balanced diet - I also take folic acid, hypericum, fish oil and a few other supplements, under the advice of my doctor. Supplement quality varies, I use pharmaceutical grade which are tested for quality and purity.
-regular schedule - Go to bed at the same time every night, get up at the same time every day.
-faith and prayer - Ask God to help you find the help you need and also to help you.
-each day write down something positive that happened or even just positive thoughts.
-forgive others for hurting you. This doesn't mean that you should let them continue to hurt you, just forgive them for past hurts and wrongs.
-forgive yourself - We all have faults and make stupid choices. Forgive yourself and others, move on. If you have bad habits, work at making better ones.
-avoid (unnecessary) drugs and alcohol, including sugar.
There are numerous books on depression. Try reading a few and incorporating their suggestions into your life.

There are studies that show that Omega 3 oils can be good for people with depression and bipolar disorder. You can try adding Omega 3 capsules to your daily regimen. Try to get ones that are 1000mg or more, and take them three times a day with food. Sunlight can help too, and exercise, which you mentioned. But it's thought that depression is caused by the brain reabsorbing the neurotransmitter Serotonin. This is why there is a class of anti-depressants known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Basically they stop your brain from reabsorbing Serotonin before you can feel the effects of it. There is nothing natural that will stop your mimic the effects of a SSRI or anti-depressant if you're really suffering from clinical depression. Sorry to say.

Hi Dianne,
I suffered with major depression in my mid twenties. I tried everything form prescription drugs to self help programs to herbal remedies. None of that worked for me. In my search for an answer, I read an article about a study that was done using fish oil to treat depression. It convinced me to give it a try. I can't tell you how happy I am that I did. I took a very little amount , just 1 capsule per day. After about 2 weeks I noticed a difference. It was working so well that I upped my dosage. After a period of months, my depression and anxiety symptoms were completely gone. They have never returned. It has been many years. I continue to take 3 pharmaceutical grade ultra-refined fish oil pills per day. When I first started, I was taking cheap ones from Walmart. Since then I have learned that they contain too many pollutants and toxins. That's when I switched to the ultra-refined ones.
I know this stuff works. I am on a mission to tell everyone I can about it. It worked so well for me that I know its got to work for a lot of other people too.
Good luck chic.

Yes, I had been having depressive episodes since I was three or four years old but did nothing until I had a post partum depression while in my thirties. I went to therapy and took medication. It took a long time, years, but I am now doing very well just taking medication. I don't think anyone would know that I had depression, as I work, raise my family, do lots of stuff that I love.
Basic message is: don't give up just because the first medication or therapist doesn't work. It took me 10 years to get well, and I intend to stay well!

Effexor has worked wonders for me, but medication doesn't work for everyone. The problem with clinical depression is that the "cures" are relative to each person. It's difficult, if not impossible, to pin-point the actual source of the depression. Experiment with therepy, motivational books and/or tapes, talk with your doctor, find a hobby, etc. I'm sure these suggestions sound redundant, but it really is all you can do.

I was sinking deeper into that black sea, I almost hated everything. Now I am better with the help of two things God and a small tranquilizer. Read the Bible and talk to people who know God will help. Another thing I did I put my thoughts on paper, later when I felt better I would read them and see how dumb the thoughts were and slow over a period of time I don't get that low anymore. I still have down time but not as bad. Hope this helps.

Try daily exercise. Treading mill and bicycle. If it can become a habit daily, then you will find a big difference to your attitude to life.
If it does not work, then definitely see a psychiatrist. Don't see a GP since he or she could misdiagnose you and prescribe unnecessary tablets. Mending mind is an art in prescription and not scientific like physical illness.

no medications seem to work for me. The best treatment I have found is talking to my therapist weekly and taking care of my dog. He makes me smile so much!!!!
