Steff_ 311 probably gave the best answer to date. It can depend upon how they died.
A person who died in a house fire etc, smells like burnt pork.
A person who died in a car accident and is burnt gives off a distinctive sickly burnt, but sweet smell. It is something a person never forgets.
A person who has been lying outside in a moist environment for a few days or more gives off an even worse sickly sweet smell that few people can stand. No matter how often you smell it, you will often gag or vomit.
Other things can effect the smell. Whether there are maggots crawling around the body, how long it has been dead, whether there is blood or other internal organs open.

It depends on what state they're found in. If they've been left for days, it's a completely different situation than someone who has recently died. The area that they died in and also the temperature have very distinct effects on the rate of decomposition.
It's a strange mix of a few things. First and foremost, it's the smell of defecation. When you die, it's not that dignified, you eventually void your bowels. Also, the smell of decomposition smells like old, rotting turkey and blood (to me). If you've ever smelled roadkill, it smells a little like that, but people smell different. It's not a pleasant experience, but once you've smelled it, you can recognize it in a second if you come across it again.

If a guy or female dies no longer in a doctor's care, the state regulations will require an post-mortem earlier an death certificates could be signed. you may desire to learn with the coroner's place of artwork to ask approximately regulations concerning to the coping with of a physique on your state or section.

This is the one smell that cannot be described only experienced first hand. But once you know what it smells like you will never forget it.
The closest I could say would be the smell of red meat right out of the package but that's not even right....there's just really no way to describe it.
