They need something to justify what they are doing.
Quite normal for most people.

Any cult is an outlet for frustrated people. There is so much sorrow in some people's life which they find hard to stand. It's to get relief from mental agony that people are drawn to various cults. In India I have seen many foreigners at very odd places with odd hermits which we consider cheats. Why America alone, India too is full of them. There are two channels on religion for all the 24 hours.

If American is crazy about religion it also suffers a split personality over it. The ban of any mention of God in schools, the demand that a display of the ten commandments be removed from a Court House building, last Christmas an airport felt compelled to take down the Christmas trees when some one commented about it, and department store advertising sold "Holiday Gifts" instead of "Christmas Presents." Yeah we sure are crazy-but not about religion-just crazy.

America is the greatest country on earth. It is also extremely diverse due to immigration, hence many different religions and cults. It is a democracy and therefore people are free to believe what they like - a concept of freedom some religious minorities in the UK can't quite grasp.

Why are you singling out America? There are lots of religions all over the world. America, however, is a melting pot of many different cultures, hence many different religions.

Because America still cares. America still longs for something transcendental and profound in life. I am not American. I am Irish. But I believe that Europe has become decadent, apathetic and nihilistic. All we care about is our standard of living and our little lives. We can't dream great dreams anymore. We no longer strive for anything greater than ourselves. All America's faults are a price worth paying for what they have and we don't...a thirst for the lofty and the sublime.

To control the masses. Religion is also a great way to get people with no money to vote for the rich.

I think that for some reason, Americans take everything to the extreme. Drinking, eating, fashion trends, shopping, reality tv, religion, etc.

Perhaps it's that the Land of Plenty leads to the Land of Excess, in everything.

Freedom of religion. If we had a theocracy like a lot of other countries, we'd have a very small minority of other faiths.
