After suffering a massive hemorrhage caused by an accident in which his femoral artery was injured, my brother (52) had to be operated on and got artificial resuscitation in a medical center ten days ago. Right now he seems to be physically recuperated, he can breathe by himself and doctors say that lab tests results are okay. Electrocardiograms and electroencephalograms are also okay. He has recovered the color of his face and he looks pretty healthy at first sight. However, until this moment he has not awaken. Although he is not receiving any sedation, he seems to be in a state of profound unconsciousness. Having excluded any physiological or chemical cause for his sleeping, I wonder if there could be a psychological cause promoting his refusal to get back to life.

I am an ICU nurse. Have they tested your brother's blood for
traces of the narcotics and sedatives that he was on. Sometimes, it can take several days for these meds to clear the body. If he is not waking up, he should have a C T scan of his head to rule out bleeding. This test will also tell if he is not
waking up because of a stroke caused by lack of blood to his brain caused by the massive hemmorhage. Good luck and god bless.

Talk to him. Have the TV on. Stimulate him. You don't know for sure that he can't hear you. So slide out the memories, pray with him listening. Tell him you brought his favorite candy and that there are lots of balloons. Tell him about the flowers that are accumulating, and that your sister is coming later on. Give him good reason to leave or he may choose to die.

to me it sounds like your brother is in a coma... which in his case may be good as it gives the body time to heal and helps control him going into shock... talk to him he can hear every word u are saying and keep encouraging to come back to u and he will i am sure of it...i doubt he is trying not to survive his body is just giving him time to heal and to make sure he is ready to accept all the medical problems he may encounter... i hope everything goes well with your brother and god bless u and your family...
