There are a couple of things you could do to solve your 'problem'. First of all, the reason you're not getting the sound is because you don't have the correct codec installed on your system that's been used in the making/compression of the movie file.

You can either download a codec pack (I use K-Lite codec pack) or you can download VideoLan VLC Media Player, which will play just about anything you can throw at it.

For the codecs, scroll down the page a little and you'll see, where it says codec packs, there are a number of different ones that you can choose from. They are all free.

VLC Media Player is free too.

The Probability is that it is a fault with the Avi file and not wmp, try using some other software like Nero showtime, good chance the file has been encoded wrongly, best thing to do is try other video playback software and if it dont work with the first few then the file is garbage.

When you create a video file you can choose which format you want the sound to be in. Usally it is in mp3 or wma. It must be a file type that is unknown to windows media player

try using VLC media player

Use video editing software to check there is actually a sound file there and if there is try converting it to another format

Well

To fix all your video/audio problems you can try K-Lite, a package of codecs. Available for free here [here]

The best thing to do is download K-Lite Codec Pack, that way you dont have to worry about any codecs. This pack contains all the video and audio codecs.
