A lot of ocean fish feed better during a full moon, all other things being equal, from inshore fish like white seabass to offshore fish like tuna and albacore. (It's not just surf fishing which benefits.) I think it's a combination of the stronger currents and the light at night.
But there are lots of other factors, like weather conditions, abundance or scarcity of bait, water clarity and temperature, etc. which can override the full moon effect (or the lack of a full moon effect.) It can be completely dead under a full moon, and a week later the whole ocean can come alive when conditions get better.
Anyway, a full moon (or any other moon phase) is no reason to not go fishing. I've never met anyone who avoids fishing when the moon is full.
On the other hand, I can't speak for freshwater fishing. I haven't done much of it, and never paid attention to the moon phase when I go.

The full moon makes the tides and currents rise higher and move faster. There are many on the surf who think full moon is the best time to fish, so the surf is always crowded, usually too crowded. Is there more fish during the full moon? From my experience it's the same at other times of the month. It's all about right place, right time, and right bait.

I've got to dissagree about fishing being better when the moon is full carte blanche. I think it is a species/habitat based effect.
I saltwater fish regularly and can not raise a snapper bite at or near a full moon during day light hours, the reason is the snapper change their habits due to the moonlight and feed duringing the overnight hours instead. The same goes with grouper and flounder.
As far as freshwater fishing is concerned the full moon seems to make them more active and bite better during the day.

Its best to go fishing during a full moon! The surf is always up and the water is moving and the bait fish are active. I always fish according the to moon and the current activity. No moon, no current equals no fish, not even bait fish. Many fishng sites have better or worse fishing scales according to the moon and include the best time to go! Check out field and streams best time to go...

the only reason you would not go fishing when its a full moon in the UK is because in the Autumn it starts to freeze in the evenings and gets very cold but in the summer its no problem

I can't think of a fisherman who hasn't or won't go when it's a full moon.It is a whole different experience at night though.Maybe those who don't prefer it just don't like to fish at night.
