If it was on both of those shows, there's a good chance it was recorded in Sicilian, not Italian (they're related, but not the same.) That could be causing the problem. What does the song sound like?

'O sole mio isn't an Italian song, or extra desirable, that's a Neapolitan song, 'reason the words are written in its dialect. some easily very regular songs are those of Laura Pausini, Celentano, Ligabue, Vasco Rossi, Elisa (with a great previous song : Almeno tu nell'universo = You, a minimum of, in the universe), and a lot of others. yet once you recommend some thing else, you may write to specify your question.

I think I know the song you mean. It was the episode where Junior Soprano (the old guy) got up to sing ; Meadow was a bit drunk and flicking things at him while he sang.
That might help you to find the correct episode but I do not know the name of the song.

if you know the sopranos episode where you heard it, you can go to wikipedia, every episode of sopranos has a trivia list of the songs who were played

I guess is the Neapolitan song "Core 'ngrato" (ungrateful heart).
Here's the Youtube video for yr checking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2Qenwzjw_s

this is the lyrics (in original neapolitan)

Catarì, Catarì,
pecche' me dice sti parole amare?
pecche' me parle, e 'o core me turmiente,
Catarì?
Nun te scurda' ca t'aggio dato 'o core,
Catarì, nun te scurda'!
Catarì, Catarì,
che vene a dicere
stu parla' ca me da spaseme?
Tu nun ce pienze a stu dulore mio
tu nun ce pienze, tu nun te ne cure.
Core, core 'ngrato,
t'haie pigliato 'a vita mia,
tutt'e' passato
e nun ce pienze cchiu'! (repeat twice and then whistle)
