And what does the process involve?

Very complicated and different with each religion; there is no one process. Not a good question for Y/A. I would need to compose an essay on something like this.

Never.

Your question reveals that you haven't read any formal theology. I'd recomend that you at least pick up a copy of the Summa Theologica or Summa Contra Gentiles
and take a look.

If you actually have the guts to do this, (and I doubt you will) you will see that it is serious philosopy, with an Aristotelian and an empiricist epistemology that is amongst the great works of human philosophy.

Aquinas, unlike many other intelectuals, was able to express his thoughts systematically, clearly, and simply; so you will find absolutely air tight logic and rigid reasoning that few minds in human history have been able to equal. It is divided into three parts dealing with God, man, and the God-man respectively. It consists of 38 tracts, 631 questions, about 3000 articles, 10,000 objections and their answers. When it is taught these days it is taught in upper level college philosophy classes.... in short it's not "mere folklore" but one of the more intelectually demanding books ever written.

When folklore becomes beneficial to the leading religion of the era for purposes of obtaining wealth, integration, power , and followers, it is quite quickly embraced by the church and then by an entirely ignorant and lazy flock who accept it without question.
