Can a vet spay a female dog when she is pregnant and kill all the puppy fetuses? This is something I've wondered about for a while.

And no I do NOT have a pregnant female dog that needs an abortion! Haha.

Yes, abortions can be performed throughout the entire pregnancy. Abortion=spaying

That can happen in two cases (usually). One, if the dog is a purebred and gets out and impregnated by a "less desirable" dog, the breeder will often terminate if the dog gets pregnant. Also, if the dog gets ill while pregnant, and there are too many fetuses or there's a problem, the vet will also do a termination to save the life of the mom.

Yes a dog can be spayed when she is pregnant and it is the same as an abortion. It is very wrong in my opinon. Just because it is an accidental breeding does not mean you have to punish the unborn puppies by killing them. They have every right to live too.

Yes they can. It usually cost extra if the female is pregnant or in heat.

Some people even have them spayed (aborted) late in the pregnancy. Because hey don't want to deal with puppies or kittens.

I worked at a shelter that insisted on spaying a pregnant cat due to deliver any day. They spayed her and they all died. Mom and kittens.

If the litter was an accident and the owner is responsible but knows they can't handle the pups, it is possible to get an abortion. The vet can also do a spay once this is done.

Most vet's, that i know of, will spay a pregnant dog if it is done soon enough after she is bred. after a few weeks, it becomes dangerous and difficult to do and most will not do the surgery and allow the puppies to come to term

the term "abortion" merely means the explusion of a fetus prior to birth, so yes, a dog can get an abortion. typically when you take them in to be fixed...if the vet finds they are pregnant he/she will remove the fetuses.

Yes. It is much better to have them spayed before they end up with an unwanted pregnancy though.
