I've been donating rice using the freerice.com website and I wanted to know exactly how much I was donating in terms of cups.
By the way, if you haven't gone to that website, do it. It improves your vocabulary as you donate rice to the poor for FREE. You don't have to sign up or anything.

I've seen the same answer on the internet, Skyler, but I don't buy it. I measured out a cup of rice and counted out the first 100 grains and it didn't even make a dent.
Also, I just read according to a BBC article, the FreeRice site has donated 1 billion grains of rice, feeding 50,000 people for 1 day.
Doing the math, 20,000 grains of rice feeds one person for 1 day. Nobody eats 20 cups of rice in a day. A half cup fills up a rice bowl.

About 6000-7000 grains of rice are in one cup. There's an interesting discussion on the site below about whether or not freerice.com is worthwhile. My take on it is that it is, because it's fun, helps you, and every little bit counts. Pity the donators can't be a little less stingy though.

Same answer as another poster, but I am listing the source.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aproximatley 1,000 grains of rice are in a cup.
Explanation: A grain of rice weights between 20 and 30 mg. A cup of rice weighs about 7 oz or about 217724mg.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Incidentally, I found this site after playing freerice.com. I was curious too.
I think it's worthwhile. I would probably eat a quarter a cup of uncooked rice (much bigger when cooked) if I eat it at a meal. I played for 20 minutes and donated 1110 grains. So for 20 minutes of my time, I got to feed four people a serving. Worth it.

You all are terrible at math. Assuming 217,724mg is correct, that is 10,000 grains of rice per cup (217,000 / 25mg. So cyndymw, you'd have to play for about an hour to feed someone one serving of rice.

It depends quite a bit whether we're talking about cooked or uncooked grains of rice. If measuring out a cup of cooked rice, there would be (way) fewer individual grains in the cup. It's more important to know how many grains are necessary for a single serving size, right?
