8 - 10 inches for a domestic short hair (DSH)...
But there are some other breeds [such as the Manx cat] that either do not have a tail OR they have very short "stub-like" tails. These types of tail can be as short as 1-2 inches long : )

I measured ours, four have tails 12" long and one has a 14" tail.

I have 4 cats. I just measured. 9.5, 11.5, & 12, but one ran under the bed. 11 inches was the average.
