My hubs just graduated from basic training, and ever since he signed up a year ago, he wanted to do FC (fire control), surface warfare.

He's been trying to get it, but they put him in ET, and he's not too happy about it. They recently asked if anybody wanted to go to FC, and he wasn't picked, because he found out too late.

Will there be any chance somewhere down the line where he could switch over? He would like more than anything to do SWCC, and that requires being an FC.

Any help? He's stressed out about this, so if there are any veterans or active duty personell, PLEASE help! =) Thank you!

SWCC is pretty elite... they're the guys who now serve as SEAL transport. I believe they train on Coronado... right down the beach. Hope he makes it...

As to the FC rate, apparently he's qualified. Also, it would seem that he missed the last selection because he didn't hear about it. It would behoove him to keep his eyes and ears open... make friends with a PN ("Personnelman" if that's still what they're called.... or anybody in the Personnel Office) so he has somebody on the "inside" keeping his eyes open for him.

He might also mention his desire to be FC and SWCC to those in a position to do something about it.

I'd say to your husband, don't stress over anything that happens in the Navy. It's not worth it. If you're not happy with the situation, just don't re-up. You should be able to put up with ET for a while.

But, I find it difficult to believe that they only want FCs.

Sorry I can't be of more help... if of any help at all... but I've been retired for about 20 years... I'm a little "out of the loop."

Your husband needs to get very familier and friendly with the career counsulors that are available. He attended tech core allready so he should be able to lateral convert IF there are openings for FC. They have been converting all the special programs into specific rates over the last few years so SWCC will soon be its own rating just like divers, seals and EOD techs. No matter what since they implemented PTS he needs to work towards good evaluations or his options will be really limited in the future. Good luck

Erehwon (or Nowhere, ha!), gugliamo, and cutiessa have the best answers from above.

It is possible for him to switch over. My own career counselor got an avionics tech A school grad into SWCC. What your husband needs is a good LPO (Leading Petty Officer, usually a First Class) and/or a good Chief, and a career counselor who really cares to help guide him to success.

Have him start asking up the chain of command. Be consistent! Ask to see the Navy instructions that dictate what he can/cannot do.

Plus it relies upon on how properly you do in assessments. some human beings suck while it includes finding out and function a heard time advancing yet be attentive to their activity interior out, the different way up and backwards. jointly as some anyone is outstanding at finding out yet while it includes the activity and doing this is attentive to jack. HM additionally will matter on what container you're going into, scientific or Dental? If scientific then a area of workmanship?

he must serve at least 2 years as an ET before he can request to cross rate to FC. AECF has a lot of the same basic systems, and unfortunately it is the luck of the draw in Core whether or not you get ET or FC. Whether or not he will be able to cross rate is anybody's guess.

stick with ET unless he wants to put in 20...ET's make better money in the civilian world and there are more jobs...tell him to try and get some NAVAIDS training and he can go to work for the FAA at $50K plus just starting out

one thing YOU may want to consider is that FC's spend tons of time at sea

He must wait 2 years and then it would depend on manning levels as to whether he could cross rate.

It will depend on where the need is but he can probably switch over at some point.
