do withfrawals from barbiturates and alcohol have an even greater risk for death?

doubtful... but for all things considered the user is better off not doing both or either-- better for health. The psychological tramua of going through withdrawls is a feisty fight but it can be done (Imho). Numeorus celebrities have battled addiction. I reccomend contacting an AA homepage for their professional opinion on this question.
