If you are self-employed or working as an independent contractor, you can make up to $399 a year without having to file a tax return.
If you are an employee, and social security and medicare taxes are taken out, you don't have to file if you are single and a dependent and make under $5350 for the year, single and not a dependent and make under $8750 for the year, or married filing a joint return and making up to $17,500 jointly for the year.
