In Ezekiel 9, the prophet describes a devastation of Jerusalem by godless men. He reassures the faithful that they will be protected by God's mark on their foreheads. Verse 4: "And the Lord said to him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that are done in the midst of it."

Many people have wondered what sort of mark was meant, and the general concensus has been that it was the Hebrew letter tav. Transliterated into the Greek tau, it looks like a T, a cross without a top piece. St. Francis of Asissi adopted this symbol for his order of monks. But at the time of the writing of Ezekiel, the Phoenecian alphabet would have been in use. Its tav looks like an "X".
