Your liver's job is to filter out your blood, so any toxins in your blood can potentially hurt you liver. Alcohol is a powerful toxin, so its good that you don't drink! Some medications taken for an extended period of time can also hurt you liver. Milk thistle is supposed to be a good herb to take to help your liver. There are other serious things that can harm you liver (like cancer, Lyme Disease, and other diseases and conditions). Eat healthy, stay away from high fat and highly processed foods, and keep regular Dr.'s appointments. Hope this helps.

any toxin entering your body gets filtered in the liver. So, any chemicals from smoke or air pollution you breath in, get into the blood stream and into your liver. any pesticides on your fruits/veggies when you don't wash them before eating them. Any chemicals in your tap water that is not filtered. Get the idea?
there was a really good article in National Geographic where a man was tested for all of the chemicals in his body. In our society, there are a lot of chemicals just from everyday living. They did baseline tests and tests after exposure to different chemicals like hairspray. interesting.

Agent Orange is one product that will do it but I couldn't tell you the chemical responsible.

Trauma is another of course.

The liver is the body's main filter. Nearly everything goes through it at one time or another. A number of diseases and conditions can cause liver problems.
