hey man just do what you want to do....Me personally, I upgrade only my music. Rims and body kid are pretty but they are like a sign that says "steal me"....which happened to my car. But upgrading music not only gives you the ability to brag (if you do it right) but also allows you to enjoy nice crisp, clear, and (if your like me) loud music all the time!

Change every fluid on the car and learn how to bleed Brakes and Clutch Hydraulic systems. Check the maintence points air oil filters wheel bearings repackable or not pull all four wheels and measure the brake rotors and drums. Then buy a shop manual specific to that body style car. Manufactures shop manuals will really be a big help. Enter information into your car log book with sections for plugs oil changes general things like the last tire ballance rotation job photo copy and white out personal info any information kept in the car keep originals in a safe place.
After your car is full of new fluids and everything runs good. You can drive to and from work to save the money for wheels tires springs sway bars alignment job. Width of the rims you choose may cause you to order your body kit and install it before putting on the cool new wheels. Remember learning how to control your car is of the upmost importance. "THE Drivers Edge Dot Com" High performance driving school is a great way to have car control and know what the suspension upgrades are doing for you. Sound system is just about the last thing that is needed your modifications may be lould after you see how good you can drive.

What's up man....
First of all congrats on getting your license.
Secondly, let me tell you a little bit about my experiences.....
I was a little bit older than you when I bought my first car and I was hell bent on pimping it out.
I ended up buying a Scion. I payed $15K for it and invested over $15K into pimping it out.....
What did I get out of it? I got attention, which I liked. But was it worth it? Do you really need the attention? Who are you really trying to impress?
Think of it this way. I had a $15K car and put $15K into it to make it unique but what if I would have just bought a more classy $30K car and kept it stock?
I don't know about your throught process but last time I checked ladies like a new stock Nissan 350z way more than a Pimped out Scion xB or Honda Civic.
Plus all of that money I invested was a horrible investment. The $30K I have spent on my Scion and fixing it up would probably get me $11K for trade in and maybe $15K if I sold it to someon directly.
I know what I am telling you right now is pointless because it's a scratch that you are just going to have to itch for yourself but I'm telling you right now... Wait.... Wait and save your money to buy a better car or better yet don't waste your money on anything related to the automotive industry.
You know what is fun to me now? Watching my money grow on a daily basis. What if I told you that you could take the money you were going to spend on rims and car audio equipment and make like $50 a month off of it?
If you did that long enough you could start making enough money to where you could start earning interest that could pay for your entire car note.... If you had the patience and the commitment to do this you would thank me in the long run.
But I don't think you have the discipline for it.... I know I didn't....

I would start with the stereo. The stereo can be put in another vehicle if you wreck this one. Not to wish you bad luck, but accidents happen. Rims and body kits are pretty much vehicle specific.
Take it one step at a time.

QUIT LISTENING TO WHAT OTHERS WANT YOU TO DO WITH YOUR CAR AND DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH IT----UNLESS OF COURSE THEY WILL PAY FOR THESE MODS....then by all means let them pimp your ride-it won't cost you anything----the best car is the one you are happy with---not the one that your friends like, cause at the end of the day, it don't sit in their driveway, and they don't pay for the costs relating to its maintenance.
