My husband just found out he's promoted to master sergeant now, but won't pin it on until june 08. He says it is tradition to celebrate now, before he even has the full pay, benefits and rank. I think it would be best to wait until June to throw a big party. What do you think?

Ohhhhh that is baaad mojo. No celebrating until it is a done deal. You better knock on wood for just having thought about celebrating! He wont really be master sgt til he IS a master sgt!! He just has that (P) now, but he hasnt attained the next rank! Bad mojo, bad mojo!

This is bizarre. Not sure why after soo many years, this question and the answers have popped up in my email. I even forgot I asked it. Well, here's an update: My husband at the time went ahead and celebrated before pinning on the new rank. I did not join that party - that's how strongly I felt about jinxing it. The party was hosted by his coworker, who also was promoted. But when he did officially put on the rank a month or so later, I threw him a proper surprise party, and it was swell.... Fast forward about 4 yrs from that promotion, and another promotion came up. He waited for his 'line number,' and when it was time, an official promotion ceremony was planned and took place, with the chief and everybody. A couple weeks later, he comes to find that in fact, it wasn't yet his turn to pin on the rank; he had about another month to go. There was a misunderstanding about the date of the promotion. Since he had been wearing the extra stripe on his sleeve for a couple weeks, he was told to go home immediately and put on a proper uniform, one with one less stripe on. He did not leave immediately; he took his time. He got in a lot of hot water for that infraction. There was talk of Article 15. Almost got kicked out of the service because of it (impersonating NCO). As 'punishment' his promotion was postponed by about 5 months (with no retro pay once the new rank was pinned on), our PCS as a result was also delayed. It was a huge stressor, a real terrible situation.
So the point in all this is that it may have taken 4 or 5 years -- I believe karma took its time in coming around, but it ultimately did come back to bite him for partying before officially being promoted.

It is by pure coincidence that I might catch you with a full mouth. After all, you ARE eating at a restaurant, aren't you? I am a waitress and I do try to avoid this, however, what are the odds that while you are eating and I need to check on you, that you ARE NOT without food in your mouth? Very slim from what I experience. Especially when there is more then one person at the table. What are the odds that EVERYBODY has an empty mouth at the same time? I do try to direct my question to the one who's mouth appears to be empty. I guess if I never stopped by the table to check on you, that would just give you something else to complain about!

My husband was selected in October of 03 for his next rank (Marine Corps) in October of 03 but did not pick up until June of 04. We celebrated privately that he was selected but we did not throw a party until June when he pinned on the rrank. I hope this helps.

Throw the party when ever you feel like it.
He wants to celebrate being on the promotion list, so celebrate now.
You want to celebrate the day he starts wearing the new rank, so celebrate again on that day.
It is his promotion, so let him celebrate when he wants to.
Then you can celebrate his promotion again, after he has the stripes.
Nothing wrong with two celebrations.

Heck, i celebrated making SSGT. , even though I ETS'ed the military the month before I was to be promoted.
It was the accomplishment of making the promotion list, not the promotion I was celebrating.

Just like it is bad luck to hold on to your old rank insignia, or to pin on your rank before your promotion... it is considered bad luck and is socially unacceptable to celebrate early like that. Don't start celebrating now.... a lot can happen between now and June. Don't jynx it.

He's right most soldiers when they know they are getting promoted celebrate when they find out rather than wait. I don't know if it's so much tradition as much as it is joy for knowing your moving up. You can always throw another party after he gets pinned. Tell him congratulations.

Most of the guys I know in the Navy say you are supposed to use your first paycheck at your new rank to pay for the party and/or drinks.
