my neice has been voted the 'Holiday Queen' (i guess it is something they do at her school). I wanted to be the onle to buy her the dress. She is one of those girls who likes to talk on the phone and put on a lot of make-up (prep). What is a good dress for her (just in general). And what would make a good gift?

That is very thoughtful of you to want to buy a dress for her, but your niece has just been honored with something very memorable at her age. First, I would suggest that you be prepared for her to say no-thank you. This may be something she wants to go at it alone or with her friends. She may also have an idea of what she wants. We females are like that. We've already doodled our favorite dress weeks, sometimes months ahead.

Second, if you really want to buy her a dress, I would recommend asking your niece who her favorite actress/celebrity is. A lot of the times the actress will be the model for who she tries to become. Backless dresses are always very fashionable.

A good gift (in general) would be to offer to pay for a limousine (if you have the funds) for her and her friends. That would definitely make you the way-too-cool uncle.

It is very nice of you to want to buy her a dress, but just to make your life simple: NEVER try to buy a girl clothes. She will NOT like anything you pick out. Take her shopping and buy the dress she wants.

As for a gift, buy her a nice necklace or earrings to go with the dress. It's very nice of you to want to do all this by the way.

It really depends on her age and body type.

But assuming she's a rather popular teenage girl, I'd go for a black or red knee-length dress in some type of halter-cut. It's very popular of a style right now.

And giving her a few magazines (Vogue, Cosmo, etc.) would be a lovely gift if she's into that sort of thing.

A simple black dress with a lace detail would be fine. I would say for a gift go with a nice string of pearls or pearl earrings. This would be something with which she can use in adulthood and keep for her future daughter to pass on to. You could pass this point on when presenting her with the gift.
