I am having 12 teeth pulled and getting complete upper Dentures right after. I am having 2 back teeth pulled on the bottom. How much pain can I expect ? and what is the best way to treat it? Also what about caring for my gums afterward?
I heard I am supposed to leave my teeth in for twenty four hours than after start rinsing my mouth with salt water, is this right? Sorry, I am a super big baby when it comes to pain and I am trying to learn what I can ahead of time to lesson the pain as much as possible.

Pain is an individual thing. Try not to get all psyched up about the pain. Whatever pain you have will go away. Stay focused on the future with a bright new smile. For me, the shots were the worst part but that too went away.

Be sure to take all of the meds they prescribe for you and follow their after care instructions to the letter. The salt water rinses are very soothing so begin them as soon as you are cleared to remove the denture.

Use over the counter pain meds like ibuprofen and ice packs. Bags of frozen peas work great and you can re use them.

Most of all, stay positive.

Caring for your gums after extraction is something you need to review with your dentist. Most will say the gentle warm water rinses are good, some will want you to wear the denture most of the time to keep the extraction sites covered. This will be helpful especially if you are having sutures. They can be annoying.

Try to ask for the after care instructions before they numb you so that you can ask questions.

Good luck and feel free to contact me off the board if you want.

Worst pain possable, 9 on a scale of 1-10. I've been shot and had all upper teeth pulled out in one day. Only being shot hurts most. A relative gave me several lortab(hydrocodone, pain med., " God's own medicine" - History Channel, 2007) before the removal. The dentist didn't know my substance abuse problem and administered his pain med.. I was still in very much pain afterward. The dentures take 24-72 hrs to get used to. Don't let this keep you from doing it. It is well worth it. 72 hours compared to weeks or months of pain and infection are different. Get as comfortable as you can. Have your partner to baby you, It will be worth it.

You can go back to work right away the next day. Take your pain medicine with you but there is no need to be off of work just because you are getting teeth pulled and dentures.

DO NOT REMOVE THE IMMEDIATE DENTURE THE FIRST 24 HOURS. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE GUMS TO PROPERLY HEAL. THE SALT WATER SHOULD BE RINSED WITH GENTLY FOR A FEW DAYS AFTER THE TEETH ARE REMOVED. TAKING ADVIL THE DAY OF THE SURGERY AND FOR A FEW DAYS FOLLOWING WILL HELP TO KEEP THE INFLAMMATION TO A MINIMUM.
