I would really want to keep it (can't tell a lie) I would take it to a police station.

If no one claims it within a certain amount of time..it is yours.

I'd take it. A few months ago I found a purse on the street at home. It had £50 in it but no ATM card or name so I brought it to the police station. The cop in the station told me there were no forms to fill out and just jotted my name/number down on an envelope, saying that if the owner got their purse back, that they could ring me.

I never heard anything back and I am pretty sure that when I was gone out the door that the cop pocketed the money. I dont believe they'd be any more honest with ten grand and it's better in my pocket than in theirs.

Here in the states - the ATM's all have surveillance camera's recording all transactions. There fore I would have to either notify the back, or turn in into the Police Station. That kind of money will be missed, since the banks have to report to the IRS any transactions $10,000.00 or more. However since you asked a "What If" question - even though I could use the money, and greed would still be there along with the "finders keepers - losers wheepers" attitude that is prevalent in all cultures - will still turn it in......

I would turn it in to the bank management. It isn't my money. It isn't right to profit from someone else's misfortune.

It's kind of a ridiculous premise though...you can't withdraw that much from an ATM at one time, and no one would be stupid enough to make a cash deposit that large at the ATM...you would take it inside. Also, there are always 2 guards that count and fill the machine with money, so money wouldn't "accidentally" not be put in the machine.

my instant answer is I would keep it as the banks are insured etc. However bout 12 years ago I was on my way to work and passed an ATM, it had a wad of money sticking out the slot thingy. In a daze I picked it out, walked into the bank (nationwide) and handed it in, the staff were astounded at this and I left my details and went off to work. Everyone at work called me stupid, idiot, Muppet etc but my conscience was clear.

About 3 weeks later i received a hand written letter from an elderly gentleman and inside was £10.00. It turned out that he had been to the cashpoint before I had turned up and attempted to withdraw some money - the ATM swallowed his card, threw a hissy fit and he had gone into the bank to deal with it. It then churned out £370 and made his account overdrawn, this was the money I had handed in, all in £10.00 notes.

His letter said that in today's society I was a breath of fresh air and I was a very nice person. Yes I could of spent that money but I would of felt guilty. So I am always reminded of that one moment. Hey I am a nice honest person, shame there are not enough of us out there.

Oh! Honesty, honesty!
That's difficult. As a new arrival in a foreign country, I found a wallet in a telephone cabin. I approached a passing policeman, who refused to take it from me. He managed to make me understand that I should take it to the lost property office, which I did.
A few days later I received a call from the police telling me that I HAD to come into the office to collect my 'finder's reward'. I said, 'It doesn't matter, I don't want it.' 'You have to take it,' I was told.
There and then I decided, that if I found something of value, I wouldn't take it, I'd just leave it where it was.

As much as I would want to take it, I would take it to the nearest police station.

In time if it is not claimed, you will usually get it back!
