In most cases they are either dumped or given away.

If you go right before they are about to toss them out you can get them really cheap sometimes.
Otherwise they throw them in the garbage.
Some places freeze meat that is just about to the date and then give it to food pantries or homless shelters.
I suppose they do that with bakery too.

Either they are thrown out or given to a local mission/soup kitchen, etc.

they used to be fed to pigs,(swill)but now because of bse etc it all has to be landfilled.although some can be intersepted and diverted to homeless people.
