Why not eat the wild fish that you catch. With proper cleaning and handling after catching, they probably are as safe if not safer than some the the imported stuff that is sold in the markets today. Best way is to clean and chill as soon as possible. Then cook within a day or two, or freeze as air tight as you can.

Be aware of where you are fishing and of any health warnings of potential problems with fish taken from that area. When cleaning your fish a strong fish odor is an indication that something may be wrong. Once in awhile you may catch a fish that doesn't look right, in which case don't eat it.

Some people don't like fish but enjoy catching them (I know it's weird)

There are some species in the ocean you should not eat for reason of poisoning. (puffer is one that comes to mind)

As far as fresh water most species are safe enough, but there are one or 2 that I won't eat because of excessive bones or dirty taste (like a carp). It's debatable, I know some people eat them but I choose not to.

We have a lake near me where you are not allowed to keep any due to Mercury, and pesticide poison alerts.

ALSO: If your fishing in a place that has a Nuclear reactor on it, and say you catch a fish with 3 eyes or some other weird mutation I would stay away from that for sure!

No you do not eat any fish you catch. There are limits to the amount of PCB's a person's body can ingest. Check for advisories on your states local Game and fish website. Also some fish just do not taste good to the average person. While I eat fish like carp, gar and Buffalo most people do not know how to clean are cook those fish and they come out tasting bad.

only eat a fish that you know people eat so ask someone if it's edible. If the fish has any weird scabs or infections that don't look normal then you can either just cut it off and the bacteria will die and the odds of you getting sick are low or if you don't like to take chances just give the fish away or throw it away.

Wild fish is by far better than farm raised. As long as the water is somewhat clean where you fish, it is OK to eat.

Make sure it is cooked properly though.

The Wisconsin DNR gives out a safe fishing eating guide. It tells us what bodies of water aren't safe and how much fish you can eat. You may want to check into your state's DNR, they probably have a guide.

If properly cooked, a fish should not contain any negative things. Most bacteria malfunction in high temperatures. Look out for parasites, though they die too.

It all depends on where you catch them. If you would drink the water that they were caught in then they are good to eat. Toxins that are in water get concentrated in the bodies of fish.
