it depends what you want to learn

There's many arts that teach the way of the katana

the most classical one is the art of kenjutsu. It is the fullest art of the sword

there's iaido that focusses more on drawing and cutting with the sword

you have kendo that also practices sword fencing using bamboo swords (shinai)

also aikido teaches the art of the sword because a lot of the art is based upon the sword

and there's a few more but these are the most current ones

Hi there

There are many aspects to learn regarding the sword and no one art has all the answers. For example Kendo will teach you how to spar and fence with the sword. iaido will teach you how to draw it and the refinement of technique. There are other aspects to learn such as daisho sabaki and muto dori. So its not just as straight forward as it first seems.

You need to find a school that teaches the sword such as muso jikiden eishin ryu or a kendo school. Other Japanese arts also have sword techniques in their curriculum but there not usually taught to you until you have mastered the unarmed techniques.

Best wishes

You will be looking for a school of Kenjutsu. This is the art of "cutting a man down with a sword", as Musashi said. The combat art. Iajutsu is the specialized form of this that involves the fast sword-draw and cut technique. Kendo is the modern, sporting form of sword fencing; it has no relationship to actual combat technique. Iado is combining the technique of iajutsu with meditation and is a more spiritual notion... The idea to perfect the movements and become "one with the sword".... Much like modern Kyudo or archery is much more a meditative/spiritual system than anything else. Good luck. There are very few remaining, qualified schools and instructors for these arts in the whole world.

Look for iaido or iajitsu schools in your area. Check the yellow pages first.
