What country are we fighting? Not Iraq, we're in Iraq but not fighting them so who is who ARE we fighting? Insurgents? People who will never go away so far as their culture demands revenge? I think these people are good people for the most part, and I certainly don't endorse murder in ANY form.

RTO Trainer, so how do we know when it's over?! You can't, this war will never end if we look at it in this light.

If you are going to insist on specifying a country to fight you will be confused. We aren't fighting any country.

Good to hear you dont' endorse murder, but you are apparently happy to let people walk into crowded places and set off bombs?

Those are the people we are fighting, defending their immediate and eventaul victims. And if your definition of murder doesn't make allowance for defending others, you've got big problems to deal with.

Update: Your'e comfortable, then, with standing by and letting people be blown up when you could stop it? It's a vaild poistion, but not terribly ethical to my mind.

As for an "end." We don't have to stay in Iraq or Afghanistan personally, forever. Once we've ensured they have the capacity to fight for themselves there's no more reason to stay.

Would you hav ebeen opposed to entry into WWI or WWII? How about Korea? Does the fact that ROK will not be fully responsibel for their own defense until 2012 bother you? Should we have left them to be re-invaded by the PRK?

Shoud we also cease all attemtps at law-enforcement? We'll never eradicate rape, burglarly, extorsion, embezzlement... So why try, right?

A line has to be drawn somewhere, but for me if you leave innocent people to be butchered on the other side of it, you might as well be pushing the detonator yourself.

Yes the world needs more people like yourself. WE invaded on THEIR territory to the praise of some and the scorn of others. They are defending their homeland the only way they can, through a guerrilla insurgency against a much much more advanced enemy. They do not share our beliefs in the respect that if we are getting slaughtered we would in theory, run away eventually. For every father killed in the insurgency, two more sons and cousins will take his place. This is really the perfect circle of death, pardon the pun. This is why we will always have an enemy in Iraq and a reason to puppet its leaders. Hope this answers your question.

We are at war with Islamo-Fascist Extremists. Not just in Iraq, but all over the world. In Iraq, we are fighting terrorism and protecting those who are innocent citizens and rebuild the country.

We're fighting an ideology -- akin to saying "we're fighting 'people that don't like us' all over the world." Anybody that wants to hurt the United States, or disagrees with us, falls into this category. Of course, the Iraqis didn't send guys over here to blow up our buildings, they are hurting us over there, on their turf, after we invaded their homes, cut their power and killed their families. Declaring a "war on terror" gives us carte blanche privilege to invade any country we want, whenever we want, for whatever reason, to obtain any objective we want. That's one of the bennies of being the wealthiest most powerful nation in the world. And if you disagree, that means you don't like us either-- and that makes you an enemy combatant in the war on terror. So watch out, Dick Cheney will come shoot you too.

We are fighting Salafist Jihadists who declared war on the U.S. and the "crusader nations" in August of 1996. They are dedicated to cleansing the world of Jahili regimes which are marked by decadence and corruption, while fostering the drive to establish Islamic rule from Spain to Indonesia under the leadership of a single Caliphate. In doing so they adhere to the heretical doctrine of "Takfir" which says it's O.K., in the carrying out of Jihad, for Muslim to kill Muslim.
The source below is a 160-page book in English which is the "Mein Kampf" of their movement. Find a copy and read it. It's an eye-opener.

We dont just go around killing innocent muslim men. But, if there were muslim men that were coming into the country and about to blow up your whole town, would you want the army to go where they are and kill them?

Even though you dont endorse murder, would you kill the people that are about to kill you?

"I think these people are good people for the most part, and I certainly don't endorse murder in ANY form"

Good people don't strap explosives to themselves and walk into markets.

In a way it is to me like a shameful tactic. We plant ourselves militarily in the middle of an inferior enemy who by religious order tries the only way they can to get us to leave their country regardless of our stated intentions. Those naive Islamic patriots attack us and get swiftly killed off. The skilled terrorists are sensibly ordered to stay back or go elsewhere (like across the Mexican border which Bush keeps open). We may "win" in the end but it will eventually bankrupt the US economy to maintain there. It's like when we would gain a hill in Viet Nam at great price and then be told to leave it. There's more going on than meets the eye.
